Herzog expects Boyd to push for USMNT call-up in near future

Terrence Boyd RB Leipzig 1

Terrence Boyd’s road back from injury has been a long one, but according to Jurgen Klinsmann’s top assistant, it could be a road that soon brings him back to the U.S. Men’s National Team.

USMNT assistant Andi Herzog traveled to Germany recently to check in on Boyd, who is in the process of returning from a one-and-a-half-year injury lay-off. The RB Leipzig forward proved impressive during Herzog’s stay, showing well for himself in several club friendlies while leaving the USMNT coach excited for the future.

“I did not expect him in to be in this type of form,” Herzog said, according to Bild. “Terrence is a fighter.

“He needs some more match practice,” he added, “but if he continues like this, he will soon be a candidate for the national team.”

Boyd’s woes began in December 2014, just eight games and three goals into his stint with RB Leipzig. A torn ACL began what was a grueling process, one headlined by several setbacks. However, the 25-year-old has returned for preseason fully fit and, if Herzog is to be believed, could be in line for his first national team call-up since March 2014.

What do you think of Herzog’s comments? What do you expect from Boyd this season?

  1. A lot of you all on here are rude and disrespectful how you talk about our nats. Soccer is still growing. Grow up and chill out trashing our players. I agree Herzog should resign, but leave the roasing of our players out of it.

  2. If Boyd does show that he has returned to full health and ability I’m all for him getting another shot at the National Team. As it currently stands there is going to be a lot of competition for attacking positions….
Target/Physical Forwards: Jozy, Wood, Zardes, Morris, Boyd, Johannsson, Agudelo
Withdrawn/Wingers: Dempsey, Pulisic, Zardes, Rubin, Green, Menneh, Kiesewetter, Agudelo, Arriola, Gyau

This is a very tempting combination of attackers, most of whom are young enough to be part of the team for more than this current cycle. If they progress and stay healthy I have to believe that either a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 formation has to be the way to go in order to take advantage of the talent we have.

  3. Im sorry but I dont put any stock in anything the coach that was tasked with qualifying for the Olympics and failed has to say.

  4. It is good that the pool of quality US players is enlarging. Injury is the bugaboo if any athletes career and it seems more so in Soccer than any other sport other than American football. It is likely, while the overall pool may be larger, that at any one time the pool of injury-free players is still small.

  5. Good to hear. I like having a big target forward in the pool. We have never really recovered from Brian McBride’s retirement on that standpoint. Ching was decent. Altidore has the vertical leap of a 2 year old.

Depth at forward is something I did not think we would have anytime soon. But with Boyd and Bacon getting back in the mix this could be a very interesting year for US forwards.

  6. What do I think of his comments… I think Herzog should’ve resigned when he didn’t take the US team Olympics. What are we paying this guy for – to continue to scout fringe players that Jurgen made promises to years ago?
