Josh Gatt takes major step toward return to action after long injury absence

Injuries have robbed Josh Gatt of the past several years of his career, but the American winger took an emotional step forward on Sunday afternoon.

After spending the better part of three years away due to a series of knee injuries, Gatt was named to Molde’s gameday roster for Sunday’s 4-2 win over Odds BK. While fellow American Ethan Horvath played all 90 minutes, Gatt did not enter the match, but the return to club soccer was a significant one for a player who has spent so long away.

Gatt’s woes date back to June 2013, when the now 24-year-old midfielder suffered a knee injury that kept him out of the entire 2014 Tippeligaen season. After 21 months away, Gatt made his return in May 2015, lasting just four minutes before leaving with knee pain that would eventually require the winger’s third operation. He has been sidelined ever since, making Sunday’s return an emotional one:

Prior to his injury woes, Gatt made two appearances for the U.S. Men’s National Team and was set to play in the 2013 Gold Cup prior to his first knee injury.

Gatt, Horvath and Molde return to action on Saturday for a clash with Stromsgodset.

  1. Hopefully everyone involved encourages him to come along slowly. He has age on his side in terms of recovery. Wish him the best.

  2. Wouldn’t surprise me if he reinjures his knee sometime soon. These guys with persistent knee injuries are never the same and almost always keep getting knee injuries. Hopefully he is an exception.
He was exciting as a 21 year old speedy and talented up-and-comer but now he is an injury prone 24 year old that hasn’t played soccer in three years.

  3. I’ll admit I totally forgot about this player. He was okay in FIFA. I assume he’ll never amount to anything at the national level but I sure hope he proves me wrong. Good luck!

    • I’d always transfer for him because he was relatively cheap, but his speed was killer if your team was in League One or the Championship.

      • Let’s not kid ourselves – he also possessed one of their higher overall potentials of any young American player in fifa. Wasn’t but 2 or 3 seasons until I had him ripping defenses apart as a right back with blistering pace and 80’s dribbling /ball control, 79 overall something like that. Myes.
