Report: Chelsea’s Matt Miazga offered to Sunderland for season-long loan

It looks like Matt Miazga could play Premier League football this season after all.

The Guardian reported on Thursday afternoon that Chelsea has offered to loan the 21-year-old centerback to Sunderland for the duration of the 2016-2017 season.

Miazga moved to Chelsea last season, but, since making the move to the London-based side, the defender has made only two appearances as he sits low in the depth chart for the Blues.

New Chelsea manager Antonio Conte spoke briefly about Miazga during the team’s summer tour, stating, “He’s a young player, he has a good technique and I think that he is working very well under the physical aspect, but the tactical aspect he can improve a lot and I think that he is improving with his work,”

Sunderland may well have an opening at centerback as the club could reportedly be bracing for the possible departure of defender Younès Kaboul. Miazga would still need to compete for playing time, however, as the team has recently acquired additional defensive help in Paddy McNair and Papy Djilobodji.

Do you believe Sunderland would be a good fit for Miazga?

  1. This is a pretty good offer. Let’s not forget that this guy was playing in MLS not long ago. Sunderland seems like the perfect opportunity to impress and find a better team.

  2. Sunderland were one of my guesses, but why not Everton since they recently sold Stones?
Everton would probably be a better fit than Sunderland unless he wants to lose every week.

    • While Everton signed Ashley Williams, they’re also still in talks to sign Sunderland defender Lamine Kone, who put in his transfer request in a few days before the start of the season, and wants to move to Everton.

When connecting the dots, Sunderland will actually have a defender spot open as a result and (hopefully) Miazga would help fill that spot.
