Report: Miazga loan delayed as Chelsea looks to add new defenders

Chelsea still expects Matt Miazga to go on loan, but the club has a bit of housekeeping to do before allowing the U.S. Men’s National Team defender to leave.

According to Goal, Miazga is still expected to leave Chelsea on loan on the near future, but the club is waiting on several signings before making any moves. Miazga reportedly remains part of Chelsea’s contingency plans should the club fail to sign any new defenders before the end of the transfer window. According to the report, Miazga is the target of two English Premier League teams.

Currently, John Terry, Gary Cahill, Branislav Ivanovic and Cesar Azpilicueta are Chelsea’s only healthy senior team defenders, while Kurt Zouma remains sidelined due to injury. The club has reportedly been in pursuit of Kalidou Koulibaly and Alessio Romagnoli, but just days remain before the shut of the transfer window.

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte hinted at a Miazga loan move this summer, and the defender has since been liked to Sunderland and 1860 Munich.

What do you think of the news? What club would be the right fit for Miazga?

  1. Maybe this works out for MM. No way Terry starts and plays 90 minutes in 30 games this season. Also at some point Ivanovic will move out wide again. Being in thie training environment and getting some tick under the watchful eye of Conte might just do the trick for him to “level up” and puch for a bigger role in the side.

This situation is one to watch

  2. Had David Moyes granted Lamine Kone’s transfer request to move to Everton, I believe we would have seen a loan to Sunderland for Matt Miazga as a replacement.

  3. if you’re looking for the silver lining, you could say it speaks well of miazga that chelsea have hung on to him while they’ve loaned out other defenders.

    • ya, I don’t think this a bad situation at all. being the 4th or 5th CB at Chelsea, training with the first team would not be a bad place for Miagza imo. a loan to a place where he is 90 min starter would probably be ideal, but if he has to stay there is very good chance he gets a lot of min with a very good team and coach.

  4. chelsea’s reticence to shell out the requested fees for some highly-needed defenders is interesting when compared to the manchester clubs’ spending and chelsea’s own recent history, and i wonder if it’s indicative of a much bigger problem there. they obviously don’t have the champions league $$$ like city, and they don’t have nearly the legacy of gloryhunting fans of united to bring the advertising $$$.

yeah, it’s just one season (although i’d also throw in them balking at john stones’ fee last year), and they still have time to spend the cash in the next few days, but chelsea is acting very unchelsealike right now.

    • The fact that John Terry is still around getting a lot of playing time tells you something. The Manchester clubs would’ve moved on 2 years ago at least.

      • not saying you’re wrong, but the handful of times i saw him last season he looked pretty solid. he’s lost his speed, but he never had that much anyway. i thought their bigger issue in defense was that opposing wingers had figured out ivanovic, and that when zouma got injured, they really didn’t have any depth (hence miazga getting minutes).
