Report: Stoke City, RB Leipzig among clubs in pursuit of Pulisic

Christian Pulisic Borussia Dortmund 46

Christian Pulisic’s father insisted that the 17-year-old was happy to remain at Borussia Dortmund, but the recent comments have done little to stop the rumor mill from linking the U.S. Men’s National Team winger with moves to several clubs.

According to German outlet Bild, Pulisic is the target of several clubs. English Premier League side Stoke City is said to be interested in several wingers, including Pulisic, while RB Leipzig and CSKA Moscow are also reportedly in pursuit of the young star. According to Bild, RB Leipzig is hoping to seal a permanent move for Pulisic, but Dortmund is in favor of a loan deal that would net the winger more playing time.

After being left off of Dortmund’s roster for the German SuperCup, reports began to link Pulisic with either a transfer or loan away from the club. However, Pulisic’s father recently spoke out against those rumors, confirming that he would remain at the club.

The 17-year-old was recently on the bench for Dortmund’s DFB-Pokal win on Monday before taking the field and scoring in the team’s final friendly on Wednesday.

What do you think of the latest report? Any chance Pulisic moves this season?

  1. The Russian commentator on yesterday’s goal was very high on Pulisic. Wouldn’t be surprised if CSKA Moscow wants him. Would be very surprised if Dortmund sent him there.

  2. It’s all part of MLS big plan to get Pulisic to the Red Bulls. He transfers to RB Leipzig who then proceed to loan him to their sister club RBNY. It’s brilliant! Skirt the MLS mechanisms while still being legit. /conspiracy

    • “Zalalem was on the U20 WC team last year.” That is irrelevant because said “carrot” would have been presented to Zelalem before that U-20 World Cup. Zelalem played in the U-20 World Cup AFTER he was convinced to pick USA over the other two countries. I am not saying thay there was a carrot or not, just pointing out your logic was off on that one. He wasn’t “always going to play for the US”, he had options and required a lot of convincing and took his time with the decision.

  3. The question facing players like Pulisic, Miazga, & Zelalem is are they targeting to be considered as part of the USMNT for the 2018 WC. If they are than they need to be part of someone’s 1st team, even if it’s only part of a rotation. Players wanting to be considered for 2018 need to be getting minutes in order to prove that they are able to contribute.
Pulisic is the rising star after last year’s surprise minutes for BVB. He’s now facing considerable competition within his Club and now there is competition popping up within the USMNT as well. If he’s going to hold off Gooch & Green he needs competitive minutes. This is why I could see him being loaned out this season in order to build off his performances last year.
Miazga is another player who’s on the cusp but facing stiff competition for a US roster spot. With Cameron the solid veteran and players like Birnbaum, Gonzalez, and even Alvarado hanging around Miazga needs to find a situation where he’ll be getting a lot of games if he’s going to be the backup.
Zelalem is a bit more of a project player. While a loan is still probably in his future, he’s further away from representing the US. He still has a chance for 2018, but it’s more of a long shot than Miazga or Pulisic. His loan will be more about finding him a place to continue to develop and less about getting him max playing time.

    • Zelalem will be on the plane to Russia if he is healthy. I have a feeling Klinsmann dangled the same carrot in front of him that he did for Julian Green and Aron Johansson.

      • Even if you simply believe the unfounded rumor that Green was promised a spot in Brazil, it would be pretty hard to jump to the conclusion that he promised Gedion in 2015 that three years from now I have an assured spot for you. If that was the case he would have been already with the full national team to gain some experience. You clearly see JK as more Machiavellian than most.

    • just thinking the same thing when Leipzig was mentioned….these moves only make sense if he’s getting a ton of games this season. RB Leipzig just came back up to the top flight so you have to wonder if they’ll be in a relegation battle all year(which makes this move tricky), Stoke on the other hand is an established Prem team that has become more possession orientated but there stance on playing young players is a unknown. Things will get interesting the last 2 weeks of open transfer period and it’s fitting that 3 of our younger, more talented players are in seemingly unsettled club situations(sans reports about Yedlin and Newcastle).
