Just hours after acquiring Alejandro Bedoya, the Philadelphia Union bolstered their attack with the addition of a veteran forward.

The Union announced on Thursday that the club has acquired forward Charlie Davies from the New England Revolution for General Allocation Money, Targeted Allocation Money and the Union’s first round selection in the 2018 MLS Draft. In addition, the Rev send the Union their third round pick in that same draft.

“Charlie adds another dynamic dimension to our attack and is exactly the type of player we targeted during this window,” Union Sporting Director Earnie Stewart said. “We’re thrilled to be able to add another player of quality and look forward to welcoming him to the club.”

Throughout his four seasons with the Revs, Davies appeared in 64 games, scoring 14 goals while providing eight assists. In addition to his time with the Revs, Davies featured for D.C. United,  Sweden’s Hammarby, France’s Sochaux, and Danish club Randers FC.

Davies recently announced to the public that he had been battling cancer. The disease is in remission and Davies recently returned to the field for the first time since April.

The move also reunited Davies and Bedoya, who were previously teammates during their stay at Boston College.

“I’m blown away by the support I’ve received from Revolution fans and from my teammates,” Davies said. “It’s been an honor to be part of such a wonderful and welcoming locker room and I leave with incredible friendships. I also am grateful to the Krafts for the opportunity and for all their support. I’m excited for the next chapter in my career and look forward to joining the Union.”

What do you think of the move? How will Davies help the Union?

  1. Finally – a good back-up for Sapong! He’s been run ragged already this season. I think Davies will work well in the Union set-up.

I’m a little sad that Le Toux didn’t get a send-off game given that he’s been the face of the Union since the beginning, but it’s the right move to ship him on. He isn’t what he used to be.
