Americans Abroad: Saturday Rewind

pulisic

Saturday proved a very busy day for Americans Abroad, as a goal, several assists and even an own goal headlined a loaded schedule.

Leading the way for the American contingent in Europe was Christian Pulisic, who provided a goal and two assists in Borussia Dortmund’s 6-0 thumping of SV Darmstadt. Among his side’s most dangerous players throughout the match, Pulisic’s standout performance comes just days after the winger notched an assist in his champions league debut.

A clash between Werder Bremen and Borussia Monchengladbach was likely the most eventful of the day, though. Fabian Johnson and Aron Johannsson each provided an assist for their respective clubs, but the U.S. Men’s National Team striker’s red card was just one of several setbacks in a 4-1 Werder Bremen loss.

Johannson wasn’t the only USMNT contributor to have a bad day. Omar Gonzalez contributed a late own goal in Pachuca’s 2-2 draw with Tijuana, robbing his side of three points.

Here’s a closer look at Saturday’s Americans Abroad:

  1. Of the non playing guys the only ones I am really a little concerned with are Zelalem, Green and Yedlin.

CCV is in a good place right now and will see the field. He is also very young for a CB.
Hyndman is behind because of his injury.

  2. Pulisic is definitely the bright story, but I wish our other young players were playing more. Miazga, CCV, Green, Zelalem, Hyndman, Rubin, Gatt, Gyau, Yedlin, Kiese, Boyd, etc (probably forgetting many more), are all currently not playing at all or barely playing off the bench.

The question that will continue to be asked: when does either Williams, Morales or Kitchen replace Beckerman?

New question: if Yedlin continues on bench does Chandler become the new starter or does Klinsmann go back to his old form and play a player that doesn’t play for club?

    • With most of the guys you mention I think it is just a question of waiting to get a chance and you can add CCV to your list since he seems to make the bench most games. I’m concerned about Green, however, since Bayern Munich seems to really like their young German Kimmich who is right around Green’s age and preferred ahead of him. I think Green needs to go elsewhere to get a chance. As for Yedlin not playing, Klinsmann also has the option of playing Cameron at RB, his current position at Stoke, and playing some combination of Besler/Gonzalez/Birnbaum at CB. I wish he would call in Villafana for the friendlies to check him out at LB since if he can hack it there, then you also have the option of moving FJ to RB if needed.

    • The other question becomes if JK does call Yedlin where does he play him as I believe he’s played in midfield in his sub appearances.

Kiese has played in 4 out of 5 averaging around 30 minutes a game which isn’t bad for a guy who played no club matches after December last year.

Gatt, Gyau, and Boyd are returning from extended injuries so I think we need to be patient, although Dortmund and RBLs quality has improved since those two last played. Miazga almost falls into this category as well since he has played almost no minutes since last October.

Green, Zelalem, and CCV beg the question is it better to train with a top 15 team in the world and go against the likes of Harry Kane, Phillip Lahm, and Mehmet Ozil on a daily basis under legendary managers or play weekly games in lower level leagues for unknowns. GZ has been playing U23s don’t think the other two have been. (Gary, Kimmich is not a CF, he plays CM, Green needs Lewandowski to pull a hammy) History would tell us its playing matches, but who knows. I think Zelalem still gets a January loan and maybe CCV. Green is pretty much there because he’s in the last year of contract unless someone gets in dire straights due to injury.

Hyndman is a special case I don’t think Bournemouth really had any intention of playing him at least early this season, seems they see him as a developmental player for the future, hence why they spent on the midfield at the end of the window. Plus with his camp injury he’s a month behind anyway even if he’s fit.

Picault who I guess would fall in there is also injured.

You do have Stanko and Canouse playing fairly regularly that could also take over for Beckerman, but really that either has to be Bradley if you want someone to play Beckerman’s way. Danny and Morales do not seem to play that style of midfield. (Which I actually hate that we play that way, I think it limits our ability to move the ball out of the back and puts in to defensive a posture.)

      • I’ve seen him in two or three games for Bayern this year and thought Kimmich seemed to go forward a lot. So, I just looked him up and he is listed as a defender and played for the national team at RB. It also said he is very versatile.

      • They tend to have so much possession that he can get forward a lot. Bayern hasn’t even had their choice eleven yet which should scare other teams.

Green seems set as their back up to Lewandowski though as he maintained his bench position with the additions of Robben and Coman from injury this week. It just that Lewi never comes out, he led field players in minutes for Bayern last season by 181 minutes, he’s been either first or second on his teams in minutes played every year for the last five seasons.
