Americans Abroad: Tuesday Rewind

zelalem

Christian Pulisic earned another start for Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday afternoon, but he wasn’t the only highly-regarded American prospect to see action for one of the world’s top clubs.

Gedion Zelalem earned a late cameo for his first official Arsenal appearance since Dec. 2014 in Tuesday’s 4-0 League Cup win over Eric Lichaj and Nottingham Forest. The 19-year-old entered the match with Arsenal leading, 3-0, replacing fellow youngster Jeff Reine-Adelaide.

Emerson Hyndman also earned an appearance off the bench as Bournemouth went to extra time in a 3-2 loss to Preston North End. DeAndre Yedlin was a bit more successful, playing all 90 minutes in a 2-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

In Germany, Pulisic stole headlines yet again with a spirited 45 minute shift against Wolfsburg. Repeatedly one of the more active attackers, Pulisic was taken off at halftime after starting his third match in less than a week.

  1. Hoping hyndman starts to get consistent minutes, bornmouth isn’t very good. Whenever he plays for the youth US teams he looks like one of the more talented players. Interesting that he is pulisics size but plays much smaller.

  2. Speaking of Zelalem he was kept off of arsenal’s UEFA youth squad preliminary roster so I can see him getting more looks throughout the season in matches like today. I know it was only a few mins but did anyone see him play

  3. Wood almost scored, hitting the woodwork in the first half. Also, Morales has been a consistent starter for Ingolstadt but rarely is considered for the national team. He may be the first American to be a consistent starter in a top 5 European league who isn’t consistently called in to the national team. A sign of our growth, perhaps?

    • “A sign of our growth, perhaps?”

probably! but it’s tempered a bit by the facts that (a) he plays probably our deepest position at the moment, and (b) more of our top international players play in mls now.

  4. I am all for getting excited about Pulisic, but people need to take their Pulisic blinders off sometimes. Pulisic didn’t “steal the headlines” and he wasn’t one of the more “active attackers.” In fact, he was one of the least active attackers outside of Gotze. He lost the ball multiple times. He got knocked of the ball more than once. I get it. He’s 18 and the best American prospect in years, but the “pulisic can do not wrong and every ball he touches turns to gold mentality” has got to go. Leave him alone and let him develop.

    • I agree. I was surprised to see that written in the article. Pretty much all of the BVB attacks came down the other side. The few times Pulisic touched the ball he was ok but certainly nothing spectacular. I was not surprised at all that he was subbed at half. Whether for fatigue or lack of impact it was an appropriate sub based on in game performance.

  5. Forgive me for getting excited but an American getting minutes against weaker Bundesliga teams in the top division at the age of 18 is quite an achievement. He’s not at the Reus, Goetze, etc. level yet, but were they at that level at his present age? I am going to enjoy the ride.

  6. I’m certainly not one to get carried away with a few performances against weak teams but, do you remember when folks were worried about Pulisic getting mi Utes at Dortmund? That was like 2-3 weeks ago.

    • Not knocking or doubting the kid, but getting consistent minutes is still going to be a difficult task.
I don’t expect him to be a 90 minute player week-in, week-out; but hopefully he’ll continue to be a major contributor across BVBs multiple competitions.

      • I agree, but a couple things have shown true so far: 1) BvB want to play him 2) he’s played well and reaffirmed what they think. They have a short roster right now and he won’t be getting 90 every week, or all that often but its clear he’ll be a contributor going forward

      • Pulisic played in 3 games in 7 days (ouch). One announcer said he was slightly limping and was not his usual snappy self. It could be just a slight injury, or fatigue, wither way he was subbed off after 45′. The guy is getting “too many minutes” for a 17 (now 18) year old. If it was fatigue, or an injury caused by fatigue expect Tuchel to skip him a week or two.

      • I just watched the Dortmund game. Pulisic had trouble making an impact today. Maybe he actually did hit the fitness wall that we’ve heard so much speculation about.

Glad to see Zelalem and Hyndman get on the field. Fingers crossed on those guys getting more minutes.
