The UEFA Champions League headlined Wednesday’s action, but it was DeAndre Yedlin that put on the most exhilarating performance in a late-game thriller.
Yedlin picked up an assist as Newcastle scored two stoppage time goals to slip past Norwich, 4-3, in English Championship action. With his side down a goal in the 95th minute, Yedlin swung a cross onto the head of Yoan Gouffran, who powered a header into the back of the net for an equalizing goal. Then, just one minute later, Dwight Gayle completed his hat-trick to earn Newcastle a stunning late-game win.
Fabian Johnson’s Borussia Monchengladbach was on the other side of a blown lead, as the German side surrendered two straight goals to fall 2-1 to Barcelona. Johnson entered in the 48th minute, but could do little to prevent Arda Turan and Gerard Pique from earning Barca all three points with second-half finishes.
Ventura Alvarado and Jonathan Bornstein survived and advanced in Wednesday’s Copa MX action, while Luis Silva featured in Tigres’ surprising CONCACAF Champions League loss to Plaza Amador.

DeAndre Yedlin played 90 minutes and had an ASSIST in Newcastle’s 4-3 win over Norwich.

Jonathan Bornstein started and played 90 minutes while Luis Gil did not dress for Queretaro’s 3-1 win over Lobos Buap.
William Yarbrough and Miguel Ibarra dressed but did not play in Leon’s 4-3 loss to Toluca.
Sebastian Saucedo and Ventura Alvarado did not dress in Veracruz’s 1-0 loss to Club America.

I think he has been solely used as a RB at NUFC
Some of our guys really need to do something about their playing time in Mexico, wether that be coming home or something. Some haven’t made the bench all season.
I don’t watch the Mexican league at all (so I could be totally wrong about all of this)… but it has always seemed confusing to me how much players seem to drop in and out of the lineups. Bornstein didn’t play for literally three years and now is a starter. Players like Castillo and Torres become starters, then flame out, then have a resurgence, then disappear again. And players seem to get swapped around quite a bit. It could be that they have both an Apertura and Clausura so the seasons are short and intense?
In following all our Yanks Abroad for about 15 years, I can’t think of anyone that has been really successful for the Nats while playing in Mexico. There have been some bit players (Orozco, Castillo, JFTorres) and Herc Gomez and DMB revitalized their careers. But for a league that everyone insists is much better than MLS, it has never really impacted our national team.
For young players that want to play for the USMNT, it doesn’t seem like a real path but maybe Arriola will prove me wrong. They definitely make more money though, so I can’t blame them.
Copa MX games always have high roster turnover compared to the Liga MX roster. this is pretty standard stuff. MLS does it all the time in US Open Cup.
