Americans Abroad: Weekend Preview

wood

Following the end of both the transfer window and the most recent international break, the contingent of Americans Abroad are finally settled in with their clubs. Now, a swift return to club action is on the schedule as several U.S. Men’s National Team regulars face big games over the weekend.

Headlining the weekend’s slate is Bundesliga action, which could see several Americans take the field. Following a stellar two-game stay with the U.S., Christian Pulisic could see time for Borussia Dortmund in a clash with Terrence Boyd’s RB Leipzig. A match between FC Ingolstadt and Hertha Berlin could also see Americans collide as John Brooks faces off with Alfredo Morales. Elsewhere, Fabian Johnson and Borussia Monchengladbach take on Freiburg, while Bobby Wood’s Hamburg faces a stiff test against Bayer Leverkusen.

In England, Geoff Cameron’s Stoke City faces the toughest match of the weekend in a clash with Cameron Carter-Vickers’ Tottenham, while former Spurs fullback, DeAndre Yedlin, could make his first Newcastle United start against Derby County.

Elsewhere, Edgar Castillo’s Monterrey takes on the growing American group at Tijuana, while Matt Miazga could see action in his Eredivisie first game as his new club, Vitesse, faces off with traditional powerhouses Ajax.

Here’s a closer look at this weekend’s Americans Abroad:

  1. Oh when will we start to see DW consistently with the Yanks over the likes of Beckerman?? I love Kyle but it is really time to move on from him, and Wondo while we’re at it!

    • He and Morales both deserve a run of matches I think,. I know Williams has had some poor performances for the US here and there. However CM is really a position that has to be given a chance to build a rhythm in a team.

      • Neither Williams or Morales really play that position for their teams. Williams has a similar game to JJ in that he likes to get forward and involved in the attack. Morales is more an energy guy like Bedoya that covers box to box.

Beckerman is effective against weaker Concacaf teams because he operates almost like a 3rd or 5th defender with the outside backs being able to pressure forward and get into attack. Where Beckerman is not good is against better opponents that pressure us in the back forcing Bradley to come back and get the ball, leaving no passing options in the middle of the field for thirty yards and our wide midfielders easily covered.

In the current 4-4-2 formation Williams and Morales don’t really work well together as neither is a great distributor, if we were to switch back to a 4-3-3 or 4-5-1 it could work, but then it hampers the Wood/Altidore pairing and is still not great with distribution through the middle. The next chance really to give them any sort of run together is probably the GC next Summer. They are both older than Jozy Altidore who many people are claiming should be weaned out for younger options.

      • yeah, the closest player to replacing beckerman is probably perry kitchen, considering his usual role (haven’t seen him at hearts tho) and the fact that he’s had previous games with the usmnt.

re: 4-4-2 vs 4-3-3: i know it’s dumb to (a) count out dempsey and (b) read too much into games against st. v and t&t, but i wouldn’t be shocked if klinsmann started seriously considering a switch to a forward line of pulisic-altidore-wood.

lastly, i haven’t seen many people wanting jozy out because other people are younger (although i’m sure there’s always a few); it’s mostly because they think other options are better, for whatever reason.

      • Nate perhaps “many” is a stretch, but since his return to scoring form the we must use younger options has been thrown out quite a bit.

  2. Vidal and Costa on in the 60th for Bayern tied 0-0. Bernat, Kimmich, and Green the only attacking players left on the bench if Bayern still searching a goal late.

    • Yes they host Everton on Monday 3:00 EST on NBCSN. I’ve argued that Monday games should be included with the weekend because they are considered the same Matchday by the leagues, but perhaps the list is just getting too long.

  3. Don’t think that he needs weekly mention yet, but Romain Gall in the Swedish 1st Division (which is the third level) plays on Saturday, he had scored in four straight matches before last week and has 9 goals in 19 matches across all competitions.

Gall was the leading goal scorer for the U20s at the 2015 Concacaf Championships ahead of names like Paul Arriola, Emerson Hyndman, and Lynden Gooch. But since was left of the U20 World Cup team, was waived by the Crew, and trialed with NYCFC.

He has lead his team into the group stage in the Swedish Cup so he should have a chance to show the upper clubs in Sweden his skills and have a chance to find a higher level. At only 21, he still has a a few years to improve his quality.

  4. Pretty crazy Yanks in Germany lineup tomorrow if you have all three Fox channels: five hours of Bobby, Brooks, Fabian, and the finale of CP vs Boyd.
