Friday’s clash between No. 4 Notre Dame and No. 1 Syracuse was billed as a clash of two of the nation’s best, and it certainly lived up to the hype.

Tied at 1-1 with just 18 seconds left, Fighting Irish forward Jon Gallagher unleashed a left-footed shot into the upper corner, sealing a 2-1 win for the hosts. The loss was Syracuse’s first defeat of the season after previously winning the first eight matches of the season.

The Orange weren’t the only top five team to suffer defeat, as SBI No. 5 UCLA was shocked by Cal Poly. A 10th minute finish from senior forward Justin Dhillon proved just enough for the Mustangs, who fell to the Bruins in last season’s NCAA tournament.

Elsewhere, No. 2 Maryland took care of business against Michigan State, while No. 3 North Carolina toppled No. 20 Boston College in a clash of ACC powerhouses. Meanwhile, No. 6 Denver won a seven-goal thriller against IPFW, while No. 9 Clemson topped No. 13 Virginia Tech in a meeting of contenders.
