A dominant performance from New York City FC earned the team a 2-0 win over the Houston Dynamo at BBVA Compass Stadium on Friday night.

David Villa strengthened his MVP campaign with two goals in the NYCFC win. The first came in the 52nd minute off a corner kick and the second arrived just before the final whistle.

For most of the match, neither team generated much going forward. Villa shined in the second half to secure the victory for NYCFC, but otherwise the game likely would have gone scoreless.

The win lifts NYCFC ahead of Toronto FC for the lead in the Eastern Conference, but games in hand for TFC and the New York Red Bulls probably means their standing won’t last very long.

As for the Dynamo, they missed a chance to jump over the San Jose Earthquakes and get out of the basement in the Western Conference.

NYCFC takes to the road next Sunday to face on DC United. The Dynamo will battle the Colorado Rapids at home next weekend.

MAN OF THE MATCH

David Villa‘s brace in a match that was frustrating offensively earned a big away win for NYCFC, which could be important as the season closes.

MOMENT OF THE MATCH

The first goal from David Villa delivered the win for NYCFC. Villa managed to make something out of nothing with the goal, and the game likely would have been scoreless otherwise.

MATCH TO FORGET

Coming off a hat trick in the team’s last match, Mauro Manotas struggled for the Dynamo in this one. The Houston attack as a whole failed to create chances all night long.
