Yedlin creates goal before picking up injury in Newcastle tie

DeAndre Yedlin shined in his first league start with Newcastle, but the U.S. Men’s National Team defender’s success may have come with a price.

The fullback created Newcastle’s lone goal in the 28th minute, but left the match in the second half due to injury. Yedlin pulled up with an apparent ankle injury, prompting a substitution in the 73rd minute.

Prior to the injury, Yedlin shined in the absence of Vurnon Anita, who served the second match of his three-game suspension. The fullback created Newcastle’s first half finish, firing a ball across the box from the right side before Tommy Elphick turned it into his own net.

Newcastle returns to action on Wednesday against Norwich.

Here’s a closer look at Yedlin’s contribution on the own goal:

  1. This is very confusing. The headline seems to say he created an own goal which counted against Newcastle. He created a goal for Newcastle which was scored as an own goal against Villa.
