Americans Abroad: Saturday Rewind

ream

An unlikely player found his way onto the scoresheet on Saturday, a day that saw a majority of the Americans Abroad take the field.

Tim Ream scored Fulham’s lone goal in Fulham’s 2-1 loss to Queens Park Rangers. After seeing the goalkeeper parry a shot, Ream pounced on a loose ball in the box. The defender’s volleyed show caromed off a defender and in for Ream’s first league goal since leaving the New York Red Bulls.

Elsewhere, Christian Pulisic earned another start for Borussia Dortmund, but exited at halftime in a  2-0 loss to Bayer Leverkusen. Lynden Gooch and Matt Miazga earned late substitute appearances, while John Brooks remained resigned to the bench in his first match since a return from injury.

  1. I think this is the at least the second time Pulisic has started but has been removed at half. Has he been playing poorly in these cases? Or were they adjusting for injuries or ejections? These articles would be a lot better if they provided some more info besides just minutes played.

    • He was not taken off for poor play. It was a tactical change. Castro was also taken off at halftime.

Leverkusen were playing very physical. Pulisic had at least three plays I can recall where he beat his defender on the dribble only to be fouled as he broke toward the goal. Because Leverkusen were being so physical, the Dortmund midfield was unable to make incisive passes the way they normally do despite controlling 60%+ of the possession.

Pulisic spent a great deal of time defending, moreso than I’ve seen him in other games this season. Leverkusen had 21 fouls and 5 yellow cards in the game, but miraculously did not have a player sent off; that should tell you the kind of game it was. Not really a situation for CP to shine (and no one else did either, for their part) and so he was subbed out.

The previous game where he was subbed out at half was, and this is just my opinion from what I saw, because of fatigue. His legs had looked slow from playing the full 90 only days before. Without that rest I doubt he would have been fresh enough to make the sub appearance against Real Madrid.

  2. I’m afraid this was Pulistic’s last chance to impresss the coaching staff. I expect him to go back to being prospect for the future instead of a regular contributor for his team.

    • Why do you say that? Shurrle has reinjured his knee, and Rues has still not returned from rehab. Mor certainly has not played better than CP, most would say and the stats show CP has been better.

      • I think Pulisic is ahead of Mor, too, and I’ve also read here and there that he’s caught up to Dembele and in the eyes of some surpassed him. But with the team at full strength he is likely a fringe player.

      • Schurrle and Reus are scheduled to return from injury after the FIFA break, maybe Pulisic will get one last chance but it’s likely that both of them would take his place sooner rather than latter.

    • Well, to begin with he wasn’t being targeted as a regular contributor for this season anyway. His recent run of matches has mostly been due to injuries to both Reus and Schurrle. When those two are both healthy, and Gotze is back to match fitness, CP will be fighting for a spot in the 18 with Dembele and company and getting appearances during weeks where BVB have DFB/Pokal ties and/or Champions League games.

Not to diminish the kid’s accomplishments. He’s not some guy being given courtesy minutes. He’s earned the consideration and is still well above the level one would expect from a player of his age and experience. Being relegated to substitute appearances and being one of the first choice subs on a club this stacked is still a huge accomplishment. Shinji Kagawa can’t break into the lineup even on busy weeks.
