Americans Abroad: Saturday Rewind

Timmy Chandler Eintracht Frankfurt 34

Saturday was an eventful day for the contingent of Americans Abroad.

Leading the charge was U.S. Men’s National Team fullback Timmy Chandler, who had a standout performance in Eintracht Frankfurt’s 2-2 draw with Bayern Munich. After proving consistent presence throughout the match, Chandler fed Marco Fabian for the equalizing goal, helping earn his side a tie with the league’s best team.

Reading’s Danny Williams and Hearts’ Bjorn Johnsen both provided goals for their respective sides. The former’s finish earned Reading a 1-1 draw with Queens Park Rangers, while the latter scored the second of two Hearts goals in a 2-0 win over Dundee.

Elsewhere, Matt Miazga made his first Vitesse start in a thrilling draw, while DeAndre Yedlin played in the midfield in a substitute appearance for Newcastle.

    • The thing about Ariyibi is its hard to evaluate him playing the 3rd division of English football. If he is really fantastic it would stand to reason a bigger fish would have made a worthwhile offer, however, most of the rumors that were said were just better 3rd division sides.

      • In all fairness it’s not like he hasn’t had interest from higher level teams.

    • Not happening. There is no question that RM is going to be Bedoya if he’s healthy with Gooch looking to be the backup. The question is going to be if Yedlin or Chandler is going to be the RB. After watching Yedlin & Chandler play recently at both club & international level I think Chandler is in better form and should be starting.

    • I do not trust Chandler at the international level. I don’t care what kind of form he is on for club. He has always been streaky. You can’t afford streaky in high stakes international games. You need consistency. It’s amazing that we still haven’t found a consistent RB since Cherundolo retired (and let’s not speak of the shadowy boneyard that is the LB spot).

I would prefer a 4-3-3 with Wood or Morris up top flanked by Green and Pulisic free to switch sides or drift in and out with the center forward (no Jozy; we need the better work rate). Park one deep midfielder, Beckerman or Kitchen whoever earns it in the camp, ahead of the back 4, let’s say Fabs-Brooks-Cameron-Yedlin/Chandler (not thrilled by either option but either would be better than Orozco). I’d be open to throwing Cameron in the mix for that #6 if another CB really steps up behind him and give Bradley and Kljestan freedom roam ahead and link up with the flanks or sneak a pass up top. I’d love to see Gooch given a shot instead of Bradley, but I think we all sense that Bradley is the safer option for the coach (and Kljestan is on form and looks to have taken Nagbe’s spot in the midfield pool). If we can’t hold possession it may play like a 4-5-1 with Pulisic and Green doing a lot of defensive work. If that happens, maybe one comes out for someone less creative and the other makes way for a second forward (since we know Jozy and Wondo will be there).

      • Yes, I would imagine Jozy our player with the most active all-time goals (until Clint returns), most goals this year, most qualifying goals in Nat history, and highest scoring rate for an American in MLS this season will be on the roster. But if you want to start Morris who has only scored 1 international goal and that was eighteen months ago sure why not. Wood would be a fair argument, but you lost all credibility when you said start Morris.

  2. Chandler played exceptionally well against Bayern yesterday. He was a threat coming out of the back, had a number of good crosses, hit the post on a shot, and had an assist (even if it was an attempted shot). Defensively he was well positioned and made some key interceptions. If Yedlin doesn’t start sorting out his play with Newcastle soon we really need to consider Chandler at RB in November. He may not be as fast as Yedlin, but his positional play is has been better.

      • Unfortunately Wondo will Definitely be called in for the November Qualifiers. JK loves him for some reason, and he’ll be available since the Quakes aren’t in the MLS playoffs.
Beckerman has a 50/50 chance at this point. Another JK favorite even though Williams and others are better options.

      • Williams is much more Jones than Beckerman. The reason Beckerman gets caps is because if he is on the pitch everyone can count on him being directly in front of the back line. Williams and Jones like to get forward and be involved offensively. People assume because they are physical and known to put in a hard challenge that they are much more a #8 than a #6. This is why both haven’t teamed well with Bradley who is more a reserved #8 than a traditional #6.
