Americans Abroad: Sunday Rewind

One of the U.S. Men’s National Team’s top goalkeepers remains second choice on the club level while another continues to thrive.

Brad Guzan remained on the bench again for Middlesbrough in a 1-0 loss to Watford, marking the sixth match that the veteran goalkeeper has sat behind former Barcelona star Victor Valdes. Meanwhile in Norway, Ethan Horvath maintained another clean sheet, leading Molde in a 0-0 draw with Sogndal. Josh Gatt also played a major part in that match, featuring for 63 minutes.

Elsewhere, Jerome Kiesewetter joined Fortuna Dusseldorf’s win as a late substitute while Cole Grossman and Caleb Stanko both played heavy minutes as their side earned points.

Here’s a closer look at Sunday’s Americans Abroad:

Brad Guzan dressed but did not play in Middlesbrough’s 1-0 loss to Watford.

Terrence Boyd did not dress in RB Leipzig’s 1-0 win over Wolfsburg.

Caleb Stanko started and played 83 minutes in FC Vaduz’s 2-0 win over St Gallen

Jerome Kiesewetter entered as a 74th minute substitute in Fortuna Dusseldorf’s 3-1 win over 1860 Munich.

Ethan Horvath started and played 90 minutes while Josh Gatt played 63 minutes in Molde’s 0-0 draw with Sogndal.

Cole Grossman started and played 90 minutes in Stabaek’s 1-1 tie with Valerenga.

Good to see Josh getting a starts, now we just need Joe Gyau back in action and TBoyd with some first team minutes

I’m curious to see what position he is going to be playing post-injury. Was he actually playing as a forward?

    • johnnyrazor

He’s been playing as a forward since returning to the starting lineup. This week he was wide in a 433. He played underneath the striker one game, and in a tandem another week.

      • LouisZ

So, how is he doing in his new more attacking role? Is his speed as before?

      • Ronniet

from some of the highlights I’ve seen he still looks extremely fast and his ball control, especially in tight spaces, looks better too!

Haji Wright scored for Schalke U19s, Josh Perez for Fiorentina U19

Jack McBean after a brace last week added another goal this week for Coventry U23s. Coventry has won 5 in a row and have scored 4 or more goals in 4 of those 5. By my unofficial count McBean has 6 goals on the season. Coventry U23 plays in the Professional Development League which is the 3rd Division of the U23 group in England, although there are only 24 total teams in the first two divisions.

Yes, at least in comparison to other players in Norway. You can watch highlights at moldefk.no

Ole Gunner Solsjaer may have made a great tactical choice playing Gatt more at forward, or more advanced positions to limit the number of fouls he’d be prone to further back. I hope he can stay healthy for the rest of the season and to start next year for purposes of progression and being that dynamic player for the Nats we started to see before several injury set backs.
