Americans Abroad Wednesday Rewind: Gonzalez, Bornstein and more

While Pachuca had a rough day on the defensive end, the U.S. Men’s National Team centerback at the heart of their backline did make amends by assisting the attacking effort.

Omar Gonzalez provided an assist in Pachuca’s 4-4 draw with Olimpia in CONCACAF Champions League play. Alone on the backpost, the defender centered a pass towards an onrushing Erick Gonzalez, who tapped a shot off a defender and into the back of the net to give Pachuca a 4-2 advantage in a mud-drenched match. It wouldn’t hold, as Pachuca conceded a 81st minute goal before a 90th minute penalty kick sealed a thrilling eight-goal draw. It was enough for Pachuca to advance to the knockout stages, though, as the Liga MX club sealed the top spot in Group E with 10 points.

Jonathan Bornstein also helped his side advance in cup competition. The fullback played a full shift for Queretaro in a 3-1 Copa MX win over Cruz Azul.

The UEFA Champions League was less kind to Americans, as Gedion Zelalem and Julian Green did not dress for their respective clubs. Fabian Johnson also missed out, as the USMNT fullback was left in Germany due to illness.

Here’s a closer look at Wednesday’s Americans Abroad:

Gedion Zelalem did not dress in Arsenal’s 6-0 win over Ludogorets Razgrad.

Fabian Johnson did not dress in Borussia Monchengladbach’s 2-0 win over Celtic. (Johnson was out due to illness.)

Julian Green did not dress in Bayern Munich’s 4-1 win over PSV Eindhoven.

Omar Gonzalez played 90 minutes and provided AN ASSIST in Pachuca’s 4-4 draw with Olimpia.

Jonathan Bornstein started and played 90 minutes while Luis Gil did not dress for Queretaro’s 3-1 win over Cruz Azul.

  1. It’s frustrating to often see articles previewing/hyping up Julian Greene and then see he didn’t dress. SBI, please just be more realistic. It doesn’t matter if Ancelloti says Greene will see some time soon because that isn’t actually happening.

    • He’s dressed for 5 out of 7 Bundesliga matches and 1 out of 2 CL matches prior to Wednesday. SBI has no idea if he will dress or not until the club releases word about 30 minutes prior to kick off. Arturo Vidal the other Bayern player who traveled for Nat duty to the Western Hemisphere also did not dress. No one can read minds, the manager said “he will play sometime soon” not in the next five days.

      • You need to remember that Bayern is not only good, they are very deep. I just looked it up and Douglas Costa, while he has played, hasn’t yet started a game and Arturo Vidal, a bonafide star for Chile and in Serie A for Juventus, has only started half their games so far.

      • Costa has been battling injuries, but you are correct they are incredibly deep. I am not even sure Pulisic would have played yet for Bayern, certainly wouldn’t have started. Vidal was late getting started because of his Copa run and then with qualifiers in Sept. and Oct. he’s been rested a lot do to the travel and Kimmich is on fire right now.
