Americans Abroad: Weekend Preview

brooks

The recent U.S. Men’s National Team call-ups have all returned to their respective clubs, and several are now set to face one another as the international break comes to an end. Still, the weekend’s main headliner won’t be on the field, but rather leading the way from the sidelines.

English soccer takes centerstage this weekend as former USMNT head coach Bob Bradley makes his Premier League coaching debut with Swansea City. Bradley, the first American manager to take charge in the Premier League, faces a tough test, as the Swans visit Arsenal in Bradley’s first match in charge. In other English action, Geoff Cameron and Lynden Gooch may collide when Stoke City takes on Sunderland, while DeAndre Yedlin looks to get back on track when Newcastle United faces Brentford in Championship action.

German action is headlined by several head-to-head clashes, starting Friday when Christian Pulisic’s Borussia Dortmund faces John Brooks and Hertha Berlin. Fabian Johnson’s Borussia Monchengladbach also faces off with Bobby Wood and Hamburg, while Julian Green hopes to carry his recent USMNT surge into Bayern Munich’s meeting with Timmy Chandler and Eintracht Frankfurt.

Elsewhere, Matt Miazga and Vitesse face a club that has been friendly to Americans over the years, AZ Alkmaar, while Omar Gonzalez’s Pachuca takes on Jorge Villafana and Santos Laguna in Liga MX action.

  1. BvB’s official twitter account does a roster prediction the day before each game. They have CP starting on the right and Brooks starting at CB for Hertha. They are usually right about the Dortmund guys at least, although sometimes the miss one.

  2. Heard Vitesse has a CB hurt so Miazga might get to play. Why no Bjorn Maars Johnson, born and raised in North Carolina and actually plays for Hearts, whereas 5 or 10 of these guys haven’t dressed once this season.

  3. Quite a few games where there is a likelihood of Americans playing on both sides. I hope most of those are televised on channels most of us can get.

  4. hopefully since most of our European players were released back to their teams early they’ll be able to feature for their clubs this weekend.
