Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Gatt, Wood, Pulisic and more

gatt

The weekend saw its share of ups and downs for the contingent of Americans Abroad.

Headlining the weekend was Josh Gatt, who scored his first goal since August 2012 in a Molde win. The winger showed his traditional burst of pace, even after all of the injuries, beating the entire backline before finishing one-on-one with the goalkeeper for a 10th minute goal.

On the other end of the spectrum, there was Bobby Wood, who earned a red card in Hamburg’s loss to Cologne. The dismissal came for an apparent elbow outside the box, a strike that the referee deemed worthy of a straight red card.

Elsewhere, Christian Pulisic made his return to the Borussia Dortmund starting lineup, playing all 90 minutes in a draw with Schalke, while Duane Holmes and Bjorn Johnsen joined Gatt on the scoresheet.

  1. That was a pretty soft red card, IMO I would be OK with a yellow, and I understand elbow to the head/face is a straight red. I did not realize weak elbow to the gut is a straight red, too.

  2. Does anyone else have this thought in the back of their mind now that Vilafana has been benched that JK will mysteriously call him up for the qualifiers?

  3. I noticed Gatt in a more advanced/Striker role which could end up being genius on the part of Solsjaer. Being up top will afford Gatt the advantage of using his speed(and yes, it’s still there)to run back lines crazy but more importantly, it could help keep him protected from getting fouled far less than he would as a wide midfielder. He seems to be a good finisher, per the video of this weekends goal, and i’m wondering if this could be something we see consistently going forward?!

  4. I think Canouse starting at center midfield is the best news here. Hope he continues to progress and get minutes. With Jones and Beckerman are aging out, we need some D-mid depth.

  5. Gatt is the Yanks Abroad feel good story of the year. Very happy to see him not only back, but making solid contributions for his club. Great perseverance from him to keep his career on track after some really disheartening injuries. Way to go, Josh!

  6. You can find Johnsen’s goal on youtube, it was very nicely struck and he figured on the second as well, Rherras sent in a ball from forty yards out and it was just over Bjorn’s head (he’s 6’5), but his jump distracted the keeper and the ball bounced inside the far post to tie the game.

It might be time to take a national team look at this kid, before Norway swoops him up. Born in New York, grew up in North Carolina,so some people would find it ironic if he did choose to play for Norway due to his Norwegian father.

  7. Also, Joe Gyau got his first minutes back for Dortmund II during extra-time. Desavio Payne went 75 minutes with Groningen II (his first minutes back), Erik Palmer Brown went his second full match with Porto B following a foot injury.

  8. wow, what a ridiculous call. Unless a different angle shows there was more force to his elbow, that shouldn’t even be a yellow…
