Midweek College Rewind: Maryland rolls, Notre Dame upset, and more.

While many SBI Top 25 teams escaped with expected results during the week, several found themselves on the receiving ends of shocking upsets.

No surprises came in the Top 5, especially not for the SBI No. 1 Maryland Terrapins, who defeated their opposition in unranked American University. A pair of sophomores in Amar Sejdic and Gordon Wild led the way with a goal apiece. Wild’s goal, his team-leading 11th of the year, came in the 70th minute to break the 1-1 deadlock and keep Maryland’s now 10-match winning streak alive.

The big upset of the week came at the expense of SBI No. 6 Notre Dame, who fell to an unranked and struggling Northwestern team, just their fourth victory of the season. A goal from Shannon Seymour put the Wildcats up early, but Notre Dame would level the score behind a goal from Mark Gormley just moments later. The score would remain level into overtime before a 94th minute golden goal from senior Mike Roberge sealed the upset for the Wildcats.

Also falling to unranked opposition on Tuesday was SBI No. 13 Florida Gulf Coast, who were defeated by in-state North Florida by a final of 3-2. Florida Gulf Coast struck early and often, with a brace from Albert Ruiz in the first 13 minutes giving the favorites a 2-0 advantage. It would all fall apart, however, as three consecutive goals from North Florida secured the upset win, with a brace from Adrian Nunez and the final goal coming from Mikey Connell.

The surprise result on Wednesday came from North Carolina, as SBI No. 22 UNC-Wilmington fell to in-state rivals North Carolina State. UNC-Wilmington found themselves shut out, while North Carolina State coasted to a 2-0 victory behind goals from Julius Duchscherer and Clayton Sparks as goalkeeper Alex McCauley kept out everything the opposition threw at him.

Meanwhile, in a Thursday Pac-12 showdown, Cal found themselves on the winning side of things against SBI No. 19 UCLA, 2-1. The Bruins jumped out to an early lead behind Felix Vobejda’s opening goal and carried a 1-0 lead into halftime. But the Golden Bears would answer back, with Jose Carerra-Garcia scoring a 74th minute equalizer before Christian Thierjung netted the winner for Cal.
