Pulisic doubtful for Dortmund's DFB-Pokal match vs. Union Berlin

Christian Pulisic could miss Borussia Dortmund’s DFB Pokal second-round match against Union Berlin on Wednesday. However, the issue is not injury related as Pulisic is battling an illness and is doubtful for the game as a result.

“Christian Pulisic, Ousmane Dembele and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang all did not train today,” BVB coach Thomas Tuchel said at a press conference on Tuesday. “That’s bitter news for us. It’s totally questionable whether they can be called up to the squad tomorrow. Two of them are ill, and Auba received several knocks against Ingolstadt.

“We’ll need to wait and see tomorrow.”

Pulisic has been in top form as of late, racking up two goals and four assists in nine appearances for Dortmund in all competitions this season.

Seems like a good game to rest in any case, Bundesliga game on Saturday much more important, though Union Berlin is doing well in the 2nd division so won’t be an easy game.

    Translation:
Dembele, Aubamayang and Pulisic our three of our best in form players right now. They make things happen on the pitch for us and we need them rested for our next important Bundesliga match this weekend. Cup matches can be played by scrubs.

One of the telling factors in fatigue for an athlete is becoming ill with colds and Flu’s. Stress and increased cortisol levels reduce the bodies natural barriers to these illnesses. Also the close working conditions also can spread illness quickly. Usually physios or coaching staff will send home players with sniffles or sneezes unless they know its caused by allergies.

Pulisic probably is due for some rest du to his age, but I think as he becomes more valubale for BVB, it will be harder and harder to set him down for a game or three to allow him to recover. Lets hope Tuchel and the teams medical and physio staff monitor him a little closer.

It was telling he was the first sub off the bench last weekend at the beginning of the second half. Tells me maybe Tuchel wanted to rest him on the weekend but going down 2-0 before halftime forced him to put Pulisic on to get some attack going out wide. I hope this doesn’t become routine though at 18 he does need adequate recovery periods otherwise he could be a nasty injury which derails so many young prospects in the 19-21 age range it seems. Really hope they are careful with him.

I didn’t expect him to play anyway. BVB should be able to handle Union with their 2nd team.
