Given his recent injuries, John Brooks was among the more surprising call-ups to the U.S. Men’s National Team. However, the central defender reportedly won’t be with the group for very long.

According to German outlet Kicker, Brooks will return to Germany following the USMNT’s friendly against Cuba as he prepared for his first club appearance since Sept. 10. As a result, Brooks will miss a clash with New Zealand on Tuesday, as Hertha Berlin looks for Brooks to return to the club with enough time to prepare for an Oct. 14 clash with Borussia Dortmund.

Brooks has missed Hertha Berlin’s last four matches, with the initial three coming due to a groin injury. The USMNT defender returned to the squad over the weekend for a 2-0 win over Hamburg, but was left out of the starting lineup in favor of Sebastian Langkamp and Nicklas Stark. Hertha Berlin coach Pal Dardai recently stated that the centerback position is officially up for grabs after Brooks returned to a competition following his injury.

The USMNT is currently in Miami preparing for Friday’s visit to Cuba.

  1. Everyone cries for two years we need stability and consistency and when JK tries to start the same preferred back four we get; well I like Cameron better here, and Brooks has an owie, and Fabian would be great as a forward.

  2. Not sure why he was even called in? not fit right now. Could have just called up besler and maybe given someone like zimmerman a look in camp. I also would like to see a cameron-bradley partnership in midfield, as thats where cameron has played the past few weeks

    • CCV is in England with the US U20s in prep for U20 qualifying. It is probably his last chance to play with this group before the WC because he likely won’t be released for the qualifying tournament that is held partially outside the international window.

  3. i’m surprised he was called up as the article states. He has played i think one game since returning from the injury table with his club, and with his injury history of late it would have made more sense to stay in Germany. JK has a propensity to call in injured players and it does no one any good to take long flights across the Atlantic for meaningless friendlies.. I hope he doesn’t re injure anything

    • Brooks is the needy one in this case. Needs to get his starting spot back. Hoping we get to see a Pulisic Brooks face off.
