The playoffs are looming, and there is drama brewing in Montreal.

Didier Drogba demanded to be taken off of the Montreal Impact’s gameday squad after being informed that he would not be starting in Sunday’s match against Toronto FC, according to Goal. The Ivorian star reportedly had a falling out with head coach Mauro Biello after learning  Matteo Mancosu had been named to the starting XI for Sunday’s clash.

According to the Impact, Drogba’s absence was due to a back problem.

Drogba had been linked with a surprise move to Napoli earlier this week. The Impact needed a win from Sunday’s match against TFC to seal a playoff berth.

  1. He carried that squad to the playoffs last year, but his heart hasn’t seemed in it since they “blocked” his return to Europe both in January and again this Summer.

  2. The Impact, at the moment, are playing better without him. It may be hard to accept, but he should still want what is best for his team. He would be a great super sub late in the game.

He brought some excitement to the league, but his manner play never set well with me. He is a dirty player that gets away with things that he shouldn’t because of his aging Euro star DP status.

  3. people are making too much of this. He obviously just had to go pick up some soul-glo at the local market… and since he wasn’t playing anyway… just asked the coach to let him beat the rush.

  4. This is the cultural you create when you subscribe to the “Legends of the past” mentality instituted by Garber allowing these over-the-hill DP’s to dictate terms across the board.

  5. Another player destined to leave the league once the season is over. Drogba, Gerrard, and the rest of the old folks are a waste.
