An unlikely goalscorer led the way, but FC Dallas emerged from Toyota Stadium one step closer to the Supporters’ Shield.

Walker Zimmerman scored the game’s lone goal in the first half to lift FC Dallas to a 1-0 win over the LA Galaxy. The win gives FC Dallas a five-point lead in the Supporters’ Shield race with just two games left to play.

Zimmerman’s goal came in the 39th minute as the FC Dallas defender broke free on a set piece. On a Mauro Diaz corner kick, Zimmerman rose well above the Galaxy back line to bash bouncing header past Brian Rowe for what proved to be the game’s lone goal.

Despite the low scoring output, there were several clear-cut chances for both sides. Both Steven Gerrard and Michael Barrios saw shots pushed just wide, while both Maxi Urruti and Ryan Hollingshead clanged the post.

Following the win, FC Dallas looks to push towards the club’s second trophy of the season in a meeting with the Seattle Sounders on October 16. Meanwhile, the Galaxy, who are bound for the playoffs for an eighth straight season, face off with Houston Dynamo that same day.

MAN OF THE MATCH

With both a goal and a clean sheet, there’s little doubt that Walker Zimmerman is more than deserving of Man of the Match honors.

MOMENT OF THE MATCH

Zimmerman’s header proved to be the decisive tally, as the defender finished his fourth goal of the season to seal the win.

MATCH TO FORGET

Steven Gerrard’s passing was not up to his usual standard, killing momentum for the Galaxy in a loss that could affect their playoff positioning.

  1. If you follow the Galaxy, this result was a) grim, and b) kind of expected. FCD is clearly the class of the league, and I wish them well. Hope to see them draw NYRB in the final.

Gerrard is obviously done to a crisp. But overall, the Galaxy are just not. that. good. Another late season losing streak, another episode of Dos Santos disappearing when he’s needed most… it’s pretty easy to imagine the Galaxy are on track to lose another first round/knockout round game against Seattle again this year, and then once again find themselves in another “rebuild with pricey old guys” off season way earlier than planned.

Wonder if Bruce will want to stick around for another year of this?

  2. Gerrard was terrible. I think we need to get Llegett back to the middle, and sit Gerard. I don’t know if this would make us as good a team as people want to believe, but it is better than where they are now. But I think LA is a one playoff round team this year. They seem like they should be good, but they just really aren’t.

  3. If you happened to see the Leverkusen vs. Dortmund game earlier in the day, this game was about the exact opposite. It was almost as if they were playing different sports. In the Bundesliga game both teams went at each other with incredible intensity, speed, and effort. By contrast this game seemed to be in slow motion. Especially the Galaxy played as if the game was being played in soft sand. They rarely even ran on attack and the ball moved incredibly slowly. They rarely pressed Dallas and showed little effort. Regarding Gerrard, in one span of about 3 minutes in the second half he made 3 sloppy and very preventable turnovers that would have been inexcusable in a high school game. A poor effort that the Galaxy deserved to lose. It could have easily been 3-0.

    • The Galaxy played a better team. If you were watching the game from the Galaxy perspective you didn’t have much to enjoy. Acosta and Gruezo repeatedly stoned Dos Santos and Gerrard, stifling their midfield. They responded by fouling FCD in the midfield. Ugly stuff. FCD controlled this game with waves of offense and solid defending.
