Klinsmann says Schweinsteiger would be ‘great’ for MLS

Bastian Schweinsteiger

MLS commissioner Don Garber has made clear in the past that Bastian Schweinsteiger would be welcomed with open arms to MLS, and now the U.S. Men’s National Team coach is joining him in the recruitment.

Schweinsteiger, who has been largely out of favor with Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho, could be looking for a change of scenery this winter, with MLS emerging as a potential destination. USMNT manager Jurgen Klinsmann believes that Schweinsteiger would do well in the American league, and that his presence would prove a boon to developing talent in the league.

“There is a lot going on in the U.S. It would be great, because it would help us to have such a player for the young players, “said Klinsmann of the German star. “If he would like that, it would be a great thing.”

The 32-year old midfielder has returned to first team training at United this week, but still remains on the outside looking in, though injuries and suspensions could change that this weekend as United face Bob Bradley’s Swansea City.

  1. Der Fussball Meister is always good for a giggle producing quote. Perhaps Schweinsteiger could help some MLS team, but overall, paying huge amounts for famous foreigners to come to the US for a year or two transition to retirement seems a dumb idea. For everyone that has contributed, there must be eight or ten that “anchored” their team. But the giggle producing part is the notion that such players help young Americans somehow. I would think it would help young Americans more to have the playing time that these over-priced prima donnas demand.

    • The real “giggle” inducing aspect is our league commissioner, the one that actually has a say in signing these retirees, broadcasting for the services of Schweinsteiger when he was on the outs with Mourinho at the start of the season.

I couldn’t care less what an outside voice says. The disturbing element is the man implementing his ridiculous philosophy of Garber’s Barnum and Bailey Circus instead of developing a league Americans can be proud of.
