Liga MX teams won’t be taking part in the 2017 Copa Libertadoes, but the Mexican league’s president already is setting his sights on a possible new competition.
Enrique Bonilla says that he would be open to the possibility of a new competition featuring MLS and Liga MX teams. MLS commissioner Don Garber previously said that he would “love” to create a new competition with Liga MX to replace the defunct SuperLiga, but concerns remain over potential scheduling.
“It’s a possibility,” Bonilla said. “Mexico has wanted to do this for some years now, to have some type of tournament with the U.S. teams, but for now we will just have the CONCACAF Champions League.”
“The league has a great and close-knit relationship with MLS. We’re working to do things together,” he added. “But we also have a great relationship with the Bundesliga, Premier League and the Colombian league. We are creating projects with each of them to improve Mexican football.”
Following a change in scheduling, Liga MX was forced to drop out of this season’s Copa America but could return in 2018.
Both MLS and Liga MX sides play in the CONCACAF Champions League, which began play in 2008 and has been won by Mexican teams each year.
There’s already a competition with MLS and LigaMX teams – the CCL. How about raising the profile of that tournament?
Superliga was a joke..why not focus on the ccl?
CCL is a joke. Maybe throw in a Colombian league team and a J-league team to create excitement, and the NASL champion
Sure the ccl isnt the most exciting tourament in the world but its not a gimmick like this..
Yeah adding random teams from all over and a minor league team is a surefire way to have a great competition.
Beto is correct. That’s how continental club championships work (by limiting the field to teams from the continent.)
This is how you know your league is ran by a circus man instead of a soccer man. There’s nothing about this discussed scenario that makes a bit of sense on any level.
Well it makes sense from a money perspective – raising La Liga profile in the US and vice-versa. In terms of soccer and quality and the like…no sense.
La Liga?
For the record, the rosters are already far too diluted and thin for MLS managers to even consider taking the CCL seriously. Adding, yet another competition (that is completely pointless) and destined for failure, like MLS performances in the CCL does nothing but lower the profile for the league and continue the negative stigma (that is earned).
Let’s get rid of mid-season friendlies with random clubs from Europe, improving the quality of rosters while increasing the actual depth of them too before we start entertaining the idea that adding more games to a bloated schedule makes any sense.
No thanks. We need to sort out our own schedule issues (playoffs, CCL, etc.) before even thinking about something like this.
