The first leg of the Liga MX Apertura Liguilla final produced a 1-1 draw at Estadio Azteca. Now the second leg shifts to Monterrey on Christmas Day as Club America and Tigres battle for the title.

Andre-Pierre Gignac’s goal gave Tigres the lead on Wednesday, but a resurgent America salvaged a draw in the second half after Gignac exited the game with a head injury.

The Frenchman left Mexico City in a neck brace, although he was seen at training without the brace. His status for the second leg is still uncertain, though. The 31-year-old has scored in each of Tigres’ last four matches in the Liguilla, so it would be a huge blow for the hosts.

U.S. international Jose Torres has usually come off the bench, although he did not make an appearance in the first leg. Given America’s 5-3-2 system, Torres could see some minutes on Christmas Day to help break down the visitors’ backline.

America may be at a slight disadvantage with a 1-1 draw, but the team is unbeaten in the league under Ricardo La Volpe. Despite Las Aguilas’ edge in match fitness, they could not break through Tigres’ defense.

American defender Ventura Alvarado had been a regular starter during the Liguilla. He did not play in the first leg, which came as a surprise. Nineteen-year-old Edson Alvarez didn’t start, either, but checked in for the second half and America’s defense instantly improved.

Alvarado may be left out in the cold for the second leg, but if both he and Alvarez don’t start, then Tigres’ job will be a lot easier.

Gignac was ineffective in the second half once Alvarez entered the game. If both start, that will be the individual battle to watch in what should be an incredibly tense second leg.
