The MLS Expansion Draft is looming, and it is now clear exactly which players Atlanta United and Minnesota United will be able to choose from in Tuesday’s draft.

MLS teams submitted their 11-man protected lists on Monday afternoon, revealing which players will be available in Tuesday’s draft. Each of the two teams will be tasked with selecting five players from the unprotected lists, with each current MLS team limited to losing a maximum of one player.

  1. Atlanta has focused on the offence up till now, so they need to pick up defenders during the expansion draft. Since they traded away S. Johnson, have to believe they’ve got a line on an established Keeper (Guzan). Some of the names that I’d think they’d be interested in would be:

JJ (OC), Boswell/Opare/Kolb, Loyd, Woodberry, Sinovic, Pelosi, Alston, Zizzo, Beitashour

Haven’t heard/seen much of what Minn has done with their roster…so expect them to go after best value/ability available. I expect them to go heavier on veterans but avoid anyone out of contract or coming off injuries.

Duka, Jeffrey, Magee, Shipp, Zemanski, Wynne, Johnson

    • Not to be on a soapbox about transparency (or lack thereof), but Barmby is on loan. He isn’t even property of Portland.

So, is he “MLS property”, “Portland Timber property” or….?

      • Good point. Not sure how a loan factors into this draft. I do wonder why he wasn’t given more minutes this season though. The loan might once again factor in…

  2. If I’m Minnesota, I just try to build something with young guys, Christian Martinez, Marc Pelosi, Cameron Porter, Olex Anderson, David Romney, all shown small flashes and are cheap

  3. A few decent MLS names on that list to pick from. Something that jumps out at me, however, is:

    Brad Davis – SKC (retiring)
Javier Morales – Real Salt Lake (announced he’s left RSL)
Frank Lampard – NYCFC (has left MLS entirely)

This isn’t even mentioning the laundry list of players who are out of contract, yet, still remain property of their respective club (an entirely different conversation that’s equally absurd). I know Garber says he’s aiming for greater transparency but MLS leaves a lot…a lot to be desired.
