New York City FC didn’t waste any time this offseason in finding some goal-scoring help for MVP candidate David Villa.

The team has signed FC Cincinnati forward Sean Okoli just weeks after the end of their second season. The USL MVP and Golden Boot winner scored 16 goals in 29 games for the hugely successful FC Cincinnati, and adds some much-needed attacking prowess to a team that just lost Frank Lampard, Tony Taylor, and Steven Mendoza.

“The beautiful game can take you to some great places and I feel so blessed to be here,” Okoli said. “I know the team plays attacking football and I love that, so I’m looking forward to being a part of it.”

Prior to joining the USL club, spent one season with the Seattle Sounders after coming up through the club’s academy before joining the New England Revolution, combining for seven MLS appearances during his two-year stay. The forward made two additional appearances during a 2014 loan stint with the Orange County Blues.  The 23-year-old former U.S. youth international has made appearances for the U.S. U-18s and U-20s in addition to his breakout season at FC Cincinnati.

NYCFC will need his attacking talents to make up for their departing attackers and to take some of the pressure off star forward Villa.

“He’s someone who has been on our radar and he will give us options in the attacking third going into next season,” said NYCFC sporting director Claudio Reyna. “It’s important for us to identify and recruit young American talent and we believe Sean is certainly a player with a promising future in the game.”

  1. This is exactly how a 2nd tier should work. Give young players a chance to get time and then have the most successful ones get pulled up to MLS. It also gives journeymen players a chance to drop a level and get back into a rhythm or stay in the game, etc. I hope we see a steady stream of these kinds of player promotions!
