The MLS Expansion Draft has come and gone, which means Atlanta United and Minnesota United are one step closer to finalizing their rosters for the 2017 season.

Both sides utilized two different strategies. Atlanta ended up trading Donny Toia and Clint Irwin, while Minnesota dealt their first pick, Chris Duvall, for Johan Venegas from the Montreal Impact. The Loons ended up keeping the rest of their players from the draft.

When all was said and done, Atlanta United ended up with an interesting haul of assets. Zach Loyd looks like a player that could be vital on the team’s backline, while Alec Kann will likely be a contingency plan in case anything goes wrong with Brad Guzan. The selection of Orlando City’s Mikey Ambrose is likely one for the future. Swapping Irwin brought the club defender Mark Bloom and a little extra allocation money, while the Toia trade produced the No. 8 pick in the upcoming MLS Draft.

Minnesota United didn’t wheel and deal as much, but certainly added some valuable pieces. The Loons flipped Duvall for Costa Rican international Johan Venegas, adding a valuable midfield option to go along with the selections of Collen Warner and Mohamed Saeid. Former Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Jeff Atinella is the team’s likely No. 1 goalkeeper, while Femi Hollinger-Janzen gives the team a young forward that could certainly mature into a solid contributor.

There is still around three months left until the 2017 season begins. However, the expansion cousins will be compared and contrasted for the next little while, no matter what they do over the next year.
