Christian Pulisic continues to be an integral part of Borussia Dortmund’s first team, and the U.S. Men’s National Team midfielder has been rewarded for his contributions with a new contract.

Borussia Dortmund announced on Monday that Pulisic has signed a new deal that ties him to the club through June 2020. The deal comes after months of transfer rumors linking Pulisic to several of the world’s top clubs, with Liverpool the club most frequently linked to the 18-year-old midfielder.

“I still have a lot to learn,” Pulisic said in a statement. “Here in Dortmund, I find the best conditions for me. And here I have the chance to play in front of over 80,000 spectators. We have the best fans in the world – it can not be better!”

After breaking through with the Dortmund first team last winter, Pulisic has continued to be a vital piece for the German powerhouse during the 2016-17 season. The 18-year-old forward has made 13 league appearances and six Champions League appearance for the club while scoring a pair of league goals.

“We are very happy to have a very talented player after Julian Weigl,” BVB Sports Director Michael Zorc, said in a statement. “Christian is already an important figure within the team and, like Julian Weigl, is expected to become a cornerstone of our sporting future. “

  1. CP is good looking, young, now rich, and a future star at a top club in Europe. What’s not to like? The kid has the world by its tail. In the first Star Wars when they are being chased by fighters while in the Millennium Falcon, Luke Skywalker manages to blast one out of the ether and Han says, with a smile, Don’t get cocky kid!. That would seem to be CP’s only problem–stay grounded.

  2. Good choice by him. Stay at a club with a vested interest in developing you instead of chasing the money somewhere else.
I wish more American players had this kind of vision and mentality.

    • @Anthony, If i had to guess, i would say that Rob wishes more american players would shoot for developing in europe and having success there instead of settling on MLS, where many believe that it’s too comfortable and doesn’t necessarily challenge you(not my words)!

I would just say that europe is not for everyone, there are tremendous biases there and i get the feeling americans have to be above exemplary to get playing time. Now, that’s not a bad thing at all, but you also run the risk of wasting some valiable time not playing and wasting away on some ones bench for a unknown period of time.

  3. I don’t understand the statement from the BVB: “We are very happy to have a very talented player after Julian Weigl,”

How does Weigl impact Pulisic’s signing and/or play?

    • Weigl just signed an extension at the end of December or early January so I’m guessing he was connecting the two signings, but something got lost in the translation. Neither signing precludes a transfer for Weigl or Pulisic just makes them more expensive.

    • In art if a painter does a painting and then takes it to a studio where someone else makes a lithograph of the same image, that is called an after. I think the term is being used the same here, as in meaning, in the same way, or a copy of.

  5. Great news. No question there. Love to read that he is being groomed as a future cornerstone. Never heard that one in terms of US players before.
