On a day when Atlanta United dominated the MLS news cycle, its expansion cousin Minnesota United reportedly made a huge splash.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, Minnesota will acquire winger Kevin Molino and goalkeeper Patrick McLean from Orlando City in exchange for $450,000 in general allocation money and $200,000 in targeted allocation money.

It would be one of the biggest deals in MLS history if the trade is approved.

Molino, 26, missed all but seven matches in 2015 due to an ACL tear. However, the Trinidad & Tobago international recovered well in 2016 by recording 11 goals and eight assists in 30 games.

Atlanta United signs Argentinean defender Leandro Gonzalez Pirez

Not to be outdone by Minnesota, Atlanta United almost immediately responded with its third signing of the day on Thursday.

Atlanta officially acquired Argentinean defender Leandro Gonzalez Pirez from Estudiantes.

“We’re happy to have secured another player in his prime who has experience playing in his top domestic league,” said president Darren Eales said. “As we continue to build and assess our roster, we believe Leandro identifies an area of need for our club and we look forward to him making a difference in 2017 and beyond.”

Gonzalez Pirez, 24, has also played for Argentinean giant River Plate and Liga MX’s Tigres. He is the third Argentine-born player on the roster, joining Hector Villalba and Yamil Asad.

Vieira confirms NYCFC is negotiating with Peruvian Alexander Callens

New York City FC needs reinforcements for the backline. It seems like the team is closing in on at least one international defender, according to head coach Patrick Vieira.

Speaking to the assembled media after preseason training in Jacksonville, Vieira confirmed that the team is negotiating with Peruvian international centerback Alexander Callens, but that a deal has not been agreed.

“He is one of the players we identified as a really good player who can do really well for us – we’re in the process of talking and negotiating but there’s nothing more we can say about that now out of respect for the player and his club.”

Callens, 24, is a regular starter with Numancia in the Spanish second division. He has been capped 10 times for the Peruvian national team, but his last appearance was in 2014.

Timbers await conclusion of MLS investigation into Ridgewell, Gleeson case

MLS is investigating the drunk driving case involving Portland Timbers defender Liam Ridgewell and goalkeeper Jake Gleeson and could reach a conclusion very soon.

The Timbers are expected to receive an answer from MLS by mid-February, according to the Oregonian. Ridgewell and Gleeson are still allowed to participate in preseason with the Timbers while the investigation continues.

Both players will undergo an assessment by MLS’ Substance Abuse program as the league finishes its review.

Gleeson pleaded no contest to his charges, while Ridgewell’s case was dropped.
