Americans Abroad Saturday Rewind: Arriola, Johnson, Wooten and more

Paul Arriola and Tijuana continue to dominate the start of the Liga MX campaign while two other Americans contributed directly to goals in Saturday wins.

Arriola scored Tijuana’s fourth and final goal in a 4-2 defeat of William Yarbrough on Saturday night. The victory sees Tijuana seal their fourth win in five games as they stay atop the Liga MX table through the first weekend of February.

In Germany, Fabian Johnson was credited with an assist off the bench in a Borussia Monchengbladbach win. The U.S. Men’s National Team midfielder’s headed pass led to a spectacular Lars Stindl solo effort as Monchengladbach cruised past Freiburg via a trio of second half goals.

Elsewhere, Andrew Wooten scored in a Sandhausen win, John Brooks’ Hertha Berlin outdueled Alfredo Morales’ Ingolstadt and Christian Pulisic earned a late appearance in Borussia Dortmund’s win over RB Leipzig.

  1. It’s time Pulisic and Arriola take control the USNT. Wooten deserve more call than Wondo.

Hopefully Arenas get these kids like: Wright, Weah, CCV, Perez, Emerson and Payne some caps in friendlies or time- killers

    • Realistically, except for Pulisic, these players won’t become important until after the 2018 World Cup. Arena’s total focus is getting the US qualified and then ready to play in the WC. He won’t have the luxury of testing youngsters until after the WC. And then it may be someone else’s job.

      • Gary Page – While I agree with you in part….”Arena’s total focus is getting the US qualified and then ready to play in the WC”…I have to disagree that “He won’t have the luxury of testing youngsters until after the WC”. Some of the youngsters like CCV, Hyndman, Arriola, Gooch, etc…should have an opportunity make squads and contribute.

Players like Wright, Perez, & Weah aren’t likely to factor into the discussion until after 2018. And by then we will have a different coach, Whoever is chosen to follow Bruce is going to have some interesting options to choose from.

      • I disagree with Arriola: ball control and dribbling, and now starting to score goals. MX is stronger than MLS, and with some South American stars. and Donovan and Dempsey left huge gap in USNT offensive and Dempsey isn’t 2010 version.

Some these youngsters could be use friendlies or when USA is winning 4-0 qualifiers and could play few minutes.

      • Respectfully disagree, Gary. This kid is starting and scoring goals for the the top team in Liga MX. If this keeps up, BA won’t have any choice. This could be a breakout season for PA. If he scores 10-15 goals in the Clausura, are you really going to keep him off the roster? It’s not like we have a glut of goal scoring wings. He’s a perfect fit in that 4-3-3. He’s shown some flair for making creative plays in the final third, which is a quality sorely lacking in the current USMNT lineup, no?

We’ll see how his season plays out, but if he continues to start and score goals, do you really think Bruce ignores him?

      • I will amend what I said. I forgot about the Gold Cup. Arena will use the Gold Cup to give experience to the youngsters. Otherwise, I think the future will show I am correct.

    • Agree about CP, but I don’t get the fuss about Arriola. Granted, i have not seen much of him outside of USMNT games, but he seems like his only realty asset is his speed. Reminds me of a young DMB

      • You may be thinking of someone else? He’s not really super fast. His chief assets are creativity, ball striking, tactical awareness, and intensity. He’s got a nice technical package as well but he reminds me of a young Deuce. What struck me about him coming up with New England are the the same characteristics. Deuce has become a technical player now, but when he was first coming up, he just plain wanted it more than anyone else and he was willing to try crazy stuff that no one else would. I love Arriola’s fire. This kid’s got it, I think. He won’t back down from anyone and I think we need that quality. He can come in off the bench and just run right through tired defenses.

    • Wright and Weah are still youth team players. What have they done to merit a callup to the senior squad? Hyndman just starting playing after months on the bench (and at a level lower than MLS). Gooch is coming back from injury. Other than Arriola, I don’t see any of these guys getting many minutes except for maybe Hyndman and Gooch at the Gold Cup.
