Cosmos find new home at MCU Park

The New York Cosmos are officially back, and now they’ve returned to the five boroughs as well.

The Cosmos will play the upcoming 2017 NASL season in Coney Island’s MCU Park, the team announced Thursday. The team makes the move to Brooklyn after spending the past three and a half seasons at Hofstra University’s James M. Shuart Stadium, though they have occasionally played at MCU Park in the past and most recently played the 2016 NASL Championship Final in St. John’s University’s Belson Stadium.

“When I took control of the club on January 10th, our immediate priorities were to stabilize the NASL, re-hire the Cosmos front office personnel and coaching staff, rebuild our team roster and relocate to a fan friendly venue within the five boroughs,” said the Cosmos new owner, Rocco B. Commisso. “In less than a month, we have achieved those objectives, including re-signing many of the starters from our 2016 Championship Team.”

The team announced that 16 regular season matches, beginning on April 1, would be played at MCU Park this year, with season tickets set to go on sale on Feb. 3. Mayor Bill de Blasio was on hand for the announcement, and stated the return to the five boroughs hearkened back to the days of the Cosmos of old.

“With the Cosmos coming to Brooklyn, we’re adding a world class franchise to New York City’s proud soccer tradition,” said New York City Mayor, Bill de Blasio. “We couldn’t be more proud to welcome the New York Cosmos to the five boroughs.”

  1. Well the heart is still beating. That’s good.

The flipside of all the jokes above….that is a better soccer field than a cross town MLS team that plays on a baseball field. No question about it.

LoL That’s rare. So Mr. Mayor, would you tell an ignored houseguest who has managed to stumble into an air mattress in the basement to sleep on how proud you are to welcome them into your home?

  3. When they say “a picture is worth a thousand words,” I’m pretty sure they were looking at the above picture. This is exactly how we DON’T want to grow soccer in America. The only thing worse than football lines on a soccer is a baseball infield… And how many fans fit in those stands, like 1,500?

  4. Would love to see NYCFC buy the Cosmos name and build their permanent stadium in Coney Island. It would make for an amazing game day experience. Families would go to the beach / the rides during the day and then the game at night.
