The UEFA Europa League Round of 32 second legs continued on Thursday, with 13 matches taking place across Europe. 26 clubs looked to continue their hopes of advancing in this competition, and to join Wednesday’s winners into March’s Round of 16.

On Thursday, Roma advanced over Spanish opposition Villarreal despite losing the second leg at home 1-0. Premier League title hopefuls Tottenham were eliminated by Belgian opposition, while Borussia Monchengladbach netted four away goals to defeat Fiorentina.

Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United booked their place into the Round of 16 with a 1-0 road win at Saint-Etienne on Wednesday. A 16th minute goal from Henrikh Mkhitaryan was all the Red Devils needed to advance after a 3-0 first leg victory at Old Trafford a week ago. Despite being reduced to 10-men in the 63rd minute, Manchester United held on for a comfortable 4-0 aggregate win.

Bundesliga outfit Schalke also booked their place into the Round of 16 after a 1-1 draw vs. PAOK Salonika on Wednesday. Markus Weinzierl’s side held a 3-0 aggregate lead going into the second leg, after last Thursday’s 3-0 road win. Alessandro Schopf opened the scoring for the Germans in the 23rd minute, before an own-goal off of Schalke defender Matija Nastastic gave the Greek side a glimmer of hope. However, the hosts looked comfortable for the most part to advance on a 4-1 aggregate.

ROMA ADVANCE DESPITE LOSS VS. VILLARREAL

After a 4-0 win in their opening leg in Spain, Roma knew a professional performance at home would see them advance. Santos Borre’s 15th minute strike gave the visitors some hope early in Rome, but Villarreal failed to find the net after that early goal.

Six saves by Roma keeper Alisson kept the score at 1-0 on the afternoon, despite Roma being reduced to 10-men late in the match. Substitute defender Antonio Rudiger picked up a second-yellow for arguing after coming on in the second-half. Luciano Spalletti’s side will be a huge favorite to make a run for the Europa League crown going forward.

TOTTENHAM FALL TO GENT IN LONDON

A 1-0 loss in Belgium a week ago, saw Mauricio Pochettino’s side return to Wembley Stadium on Thursday with a strong chance of advancing.  Victor Wanyama’s 61st minute goal brought Tottenham level on aggregate knowing another goal would see them through. Christian Eriksen put the hosts up after 10 minutes before an own-goal off of Spurs forward Harry Kane gave the visitors what they needed.

Dele Alli’s 39th minute red-card reduced the hosts to 10-men before Wanyama gave Tottenham some hope right after the hour mark. Jeremy Perbet’s 82nd minute striker from inside the box slammed the door on any late comeback by the London club.

After being huge favorites to win this year’s Europa League, Tottenham will now turn their focus back to the Premier League title race.

STINDL’S HAT TRICK SPARKS GLADBACH’ ON ROAD

In the most-intriguing draw of the round, Borussia Monchengladbach fell, 1-0, in the first leg vs. Fiorentina thanks to a Federico Bernadeschi free-kick. After going down 2-0 just before the half-hour mark in the second leg in Florence, Gladbach knew they had to dig in for a comeback.

Lars Stindl’s 44th minute penalty kick sparked the comeback, which the striker would continue after the halftime break. In the 47th, Stindl rifled home with his left-foot to make it 3-2 on aggregate, before completing his hat-trick in the 55th from a long-range effort.

Andreas Christensen added an insurance goal at the hour mark as he headed home Jonas Hofmann’s cross for a 4-3 aggregate lead. Gladbach held on as keeper Yann Sommer made four saves in the win. Ciprian Tatarusanu made four saves in the defeat for Fiorentina.

Gladbach will hope this huge road win will give them momentum in Europe and also in the Bundesliga going forward.
