Jurgen Klinsmann may have departed the U.S. Soccer program, but his son will have a vital part to play in an upcoming push to a World Cup.

The U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team is just days away from the start of their World Cup qualifying push, and head coach Tab Ramos has named Jonathan Klinsmann as the starting goalkeeper for the upcoming CONCACAF U-20 Championship. Ramos confirmed that the University of California goalkeeper will be the team’s starter heading into the tournament, which begins on Saturday against Panama in Costa Rica.

“We’ve had a very good goalkeeper competition in this cycle in particular,” Ramos said Thursday on a conference call. “Both Jonathan Klinsmann and J.T. Marcinkowksi have done a great job in terms of competing with each other, in particular, over the last six to nine months. At this point, I think Jonathan Klinsmann looks to be the one that’s ahead as the starter for the tournament and Jonathan is really coming along well.

“I know that he’s had some training opportunities in Europe. He’s had some training on the side, not just training with Cal, so he’s been doing a lot of homework.  At this point, both goalkeepers look very good but I think Jonathan will be our starter starting Saturday.”

The U.S. opens the tournament Saturday against Panama before facing Haiti and Saint Kitts & Nevis in the final two group stage games. The top two teams in group play will advance to a second round featuring two groups of six, with the top two teams in each group sealing berths in the U-20 World Cup.
