The New York Red Bulls needed a replacement for Dax McCarty in the captain position, and it has been filled by one of his former midfield running mates. Sacha Kljestan was given the armband for the 2017 season on Wednesday.

Kljestan helped guide the Red Bulls to the Eastern Conference finals for the second consecutive season in 2016. He became just the second player in MLS history to record 20 assists in a single season and earned significant playing time with the U.S. Men’s National Team as a result.

“It’s definitely an honor to be named captain of this club,” Kljestan said. “I am excited about the chance to lead the group.”

“He’s a great leader,” head coach Jesse Marsch said. “He’s such a big piece of what we do.”

DAVIS SET TO RETIRE AS DYNAMO PLAYER

It’s only fitting one of the players who made the Houston Dynamo what they are will retire as a member of the club. Brad Davis will sign a one-day contract with the Dynamo on Thursday so he can officially retire as a member of the club.

Davis moved to Houston with the rest of the San Jose Earthquakes team in 2006 and became a fixture with the club before his departure last season to join Sporting Kansas City.

The set piece specialist holds a plethora of Dynamo club records, including games and minutes played, assists, shots on goal, corner kicks and game-winning assists.

D.C. UNITED ANNOUNCES STADIUM NAMING RIGHTS

The excitement around the next soccer-specific stadium to open for an MLS side is growing, and D.C. United’s Buzzard Point location received a name on Wednesday morning.

The Black and Red will be playing at Audi Field starting in 2018. The club hopes to break ground on the facility in the coming months and it will be located in the Southwest part of the District of Columbia.

United managing general partner Jason Levien said. “Audi has transcended the automobile industry and fully embraced the culture of soccer, especially in MLS. NEW YORK CITY FC GAIN MIDFIELDER ON LOAN FROM MANCHESTER CITY

New York City FC picked up an addition to its midfield thanks to partner club Manchester City. The third-year team signed Yangel Herrera on loan for the 2017 season.

Herrera is a Venezuelan defensive midfielder who recently joined Manchester City from Atletico Venezuela. The move will help Herrera receive playing time as well as bolster NYCFC’s depth at the position.

“I’m very happy to take this next step in my career,” Herrera said. “To have the opportunity to play with such a high caliber of players is very exciting and to join a team that has a good football philosophy is very important to me.”
