VVV-Venlo had an easy time handling their opponents Helmond Sport, and they were aided in that by American Abroad Gedion Zelalem.

Zelalem tallied up his first goal for his current club, knocking in the final score in a 7-0 rout for the first of his career. The Arsenal loanee and U.S. U-23 Men’s National Team midfielder knocked in the extra point in the 87th minute in a match dominated start-to-finish by his team. Venlo got to work early with a 5th minute goal from Vito van Crooy and would notch another five between the 47th to 63rd minutes, before Zelalem found the net.

The in-swinging cross from the right wing was tipped down by a clever backheel from the Venlo forward, leaving the ball just outside the six yard box where Zelalem ran onto it and knocked it past the keeper with his right foot.

Here’s a video of Zelalem’s first professional goal.

      • Because it was 6-0 and the other team had given up or you think the Dutch 2nd division is equal to the NCAA?

      • The Dutch second division is much better than the NCAA but not even close to MLS level. I agree this is nothing to get excited about. This has been a disappointing year for GZ. He had a good year at Rangers (again at a very low level) and I was hoping he’d build on it but it’s tough to consider this progress. I remember people were saying a couple of years ago he was the most talented midfielder in the pool and other ridiculous hyperbole. Most young prospects flame out – for everyone who makes it like CP, there’s probably ten that fade away. And that isn’t unique to Americans.
