Americans Abroad Wednesday Rewind: Hyndman, Wood, Villafana and more

hyndman

Emerson Hyndman has become an integral part of the Rangers lineup since making his temporary move to Scotland, and on Wednesday, the young American midfielder stepped up yet again when the team needed him most.

Hyndman scored a stoppage time winner on Wednesday, leading Rangers to a 3-2 win over St. Johnstone. The goal is Hyndman’s third in six apearances since joining the club on loan from Premier League side Bournemouth.

The midfielder wasn’t the only American to get on the scoresheet, as Bobby Wood fired a late goal of his own in DFB-Pokal action. The finish, however, wasn’t enough to lead Hamburg to a win over Fabian Johnson and Borussia Monchengladbach, who sealed their spot in the competition’s semifinal with a 3-2 victory.

Elsewhere, Jorge Villafana went a full 90 minutes for Santos Laguna while Matt Miazga helped Vitesse earn a Dutch Cup win. David Wagner wasn’t as lucky, though, as Huddersfield Town fell, 5-1, to Manchester City after scoring an early goal.

  1. Two excellent goals there. Hyndman seemed to have the other team fear him when he got the ball. His side volley was killer.

  2. i’ll just add on to the emerson praise here: i’ve watched several of his rangers games recently (not purposefully; just happened to have streams available when i had free time), and he has almost always been one of the best on the field. his intelligence on the ball, especially, is just on a higher level than the others.

as other commenters have said, it’s just the spl; but the fact that he looks a class above the other players at just 20 years old is encouraging. i’d love to see him challenging for a spot at bournemouth next season (whether championship or epl), and i think he’s due for another call up to the national team.

  3. Agree on multiple comments above. Bobby Wood has created every one of his goals basically from nothing. I don’t think he’s had a single tap-in and the few games I watched he almost never receives the ball in the box. I hope someone better than Hamburg buys him. And if we are playing a team that is going to dominate possession against the US, I’d take him over Altidore to produce a 1v1 counter attack goal.
Also, Emerson looks great. The SPL is pretty poor (it seems to be worse over the past few years, Celtic is 27-1-0 so far!) but his touch and movement are excellent. I hope that Bournemouth gives him a real shot next year.

  4. Saw the highlights for yesterday’s Rangers game, and Hyndman was very active. Created a chance for a teammate the clanged off the post in the first half by taking a defender 1-v-1 with some nice moves. Hit the crossbar with a long range shot just minutes before scoring the winner on a nice move and shot from the top of the box. Also, the report attached to the highlights said Hyndman gave St. Johnstone fits all game long. I know it is just Scotland, but he seems to be displaying skills that will allow him to be successful going forward. He is an exciting prospect to watch.

  5. Mexico U20s beat El Salvador’s 6-1 meaning the US just needs to avoid a loss of 3 goals or more to advance to the WC. Of course a draw earns a spot in the championship game.

  6. I have watched Hyndman play a few of these games. He is usually the most polished technical player on the pitch. He has grown and is stronger. I am hoping to see him a lot this summer in the gold cup. There is such a lack of quality midfield play, maybe he can be part of the answer going forward.

  7. Hyndman deserves a look and what’s up with kitchen isn’t that 2 games in a row he hasn’t seen the pitch

    • depending on what we want from our lone striker, i’ll agree.

bobby and jozy have very different games: bobby’s good at running onto long balls and conjuring something out of nothing, but not very good when he’s required to link up with others in a passing game; jozy excels in a passing game (he almost seems to like playing provider more than scorer), and is *not* the player you want with the ball if you only get one chance at goal.

it almost reminds me of the altidore/davies dynamic; not because charlie’s and bobby’s styles match up exactly, but because the two strikers might work really well if we can get them reps together.
