Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Brooks, Cameron, Hyndman and more

In the final match before the international break, a pair of Americans Abroad found the back of the net over the weekend.

John Brooks and Emerson Hyndman scored goals on Saturday, although their club fortunes differed drastically in terms of result. Brooks’ headed finish wasn’t enough to help Hertha Berlin overcome Cologne in a 4-2 defeat while Hyndman’s finish began a Rangers rout of Hamilton Academical.

Meanwhile in Germany, Christian Pulisic started and played a bulk of Borussia Dortmund’s win over Ingolstadt. Aron Johannsson also found the field just days after revealing he could leave Werder Bremen this summer.

Elsewhere, Geoff Cameron started in Stoke City’s narrow defeat to Chelsea while Jorge Villafana logged a full shift for Santos Laguna.

  1. Rubin had been battling a muscle injury, he was listed on the team sheet on Saturday, but didn’t dress for the match so I’m guessing the injury flared up again.

  2. I’m not sure what it is with Danny Williams but this is now two staffs who have not favored him. Other than the goal against Brazil he hasn’t really been great in his appearances.

Morales is only a Bundesliga player for two more months, he plays for a bad team and is not one of there better players either, rated as their 8th best by who scored. I was shocked that he had 13 caps because I can’t remember him doing much of anything in any of them.

With a lot of these guys it’s the situation they are in, Miazga a year and a half ago was favored for a regular spot now because of his club situation he’s not even considered. A year ago Bedoya was the hottest USMNT player now that he plays with less skilled players in MLS he is no good, Bradley scored 18 goals for Herenveen and 26 in the ten years since, he didn’t forget how to play he’s just in a different role in a different system.

    • Interesting points, but I think it’s seeing the same players given lots of playing time while they fail to make an impact that makes fans sour on them.

Bedoya excited us initially when he showed his great work rate but ultimately he failed to do much with all of the playing time he was given, especially in the final third.

Lack of goal scoring is the least of our complaints against Bradley these days. He may remember how to play, but his performances on the field haven’t reflected that in about 3 years now.

  3. Geoff Cameron started and played AN EXCELLENT 90 minutes AS A DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDER in Stoke City’s 1-0 loss to Chelsea on Saturday

Emerson Hyndman played A CALL-UP-WORTHY 90 minutes GAME and scored A GOAL in Rangers’ 4-0 win over Hamilton Academical on Saturday.

Michael Orozco AND Jorge Villafana started and played FULL 90 minutes in Tijuana’s 1-1 draw with Santos Laguna on Friday.(GOOD FOR USMNT)

Danny Williams started and played A STRONG 90 minutes in Reading’s 2-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday. LAST TIME I CHECKED THE CHAMPIONSHIP LEAGUE IS A HIGHER LEVEL THAN MLS. WHAT GIVES WITH THE CALL UP?

Alfredo Morales started and played 90 minutes for Ingolstadt, A BUNDESLIGA TEAM, ENOUGH SAID

Bruce Arena I trust you but we need to be using some of these “tools in our Arsenal” that are playing at the highest level

Alejandro Bedoya and Michael Bradley, against Alfredo Morales and Danny Williams IMO is like no competition. Well we’ll see whats good on Friday (I mean it’s only Honduras 😀 )

    • Another answer maybe this, Arena views Jones as a starter, which means he isn’t going to fly Williams or Morales half way around the world for one match, just as he said he wasn’t doing with Chandler. The flight from Europe to San Jose is pretty brutal and then to Panama and back to Europe would be a lot as well (probably why Wood is sitting with his bad back, might have tried it if it was Chicago and Mexico City).

      • Of all the non call ups the last few years, Danny Williams getting overlooked more times than not has been the most perplexing to me… Every time I’ve watched him I see a complete player

      • I could buy that explanation except for 1 major fact you left out. Jones is suspended for the game against Honduras, so he’s not going to be a starter in the 1st game. Williams/Morales could have been called in for the match against Honduras than released back to their club afterwords if Jones proved in practice that he was a better option in Arena’s system/style.

      • Lost flying from England to San Jose is 11 hours and 15 minutes non stop and 10:15 on the way back that’s pretty brutal even with time to recover.
