Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Wood, Rubin, Guzan and more

While a referee strike saw the postponement of Liga MX play, a pair of Americans Abroad made their mark by scoring goals in European action.

Bobby Wood scored the game-winning goal late in Sunday’s clash with Fabian Johnson and Borussia Monchengladbach, leading Hamburg to a 2-1 win that pushes them closer to safety. The U.S. Men’s National Team forward’s goal came in the 80th minute, sealing victory for Hamburg in a clash of American stars.

On Friday, Rubio Rubin scored a goal of his own, his first since moving to Silkeborg. The goal, however, came in a lopsided losing effort as the club lost, 5-1, to FC Nordsjaelland.

In English FA Cup action, Brad Guzan returned for Middlesbrough in goal, but could do little to overcome the onslaught from Manchester City in a 2-0 defeat.

Elsewhere, Emerson Hyndman got his first taste of the Old Firm in a 1-1 draw with Celtic, Steve Clark made his debut for FC Horsens and John Brooks led Hertha Berlin to victory over Christian Pulisic and Borussia Dortmund.

  1. Why isn’t Morales getting more attention about being called in for March? He is starting every single week in the Bundesliga and never gets mentioned about getting called up.

    • In the past, anyone starting consistently in a top 5 European league could be considered a lock for the national team and a likely starter. The fact that he gets little consideration, means, I hope, that we have gotten that much better that we don’t need him.

      • While I do agree with your sentiment, he seems to be left out of the conversation altogether. I feel he at least needs to be called into camp. Not necessarily start even but allowed to compete.

    • He plays for one of the worst teams in Bundesliga and he’s the 8th rated player on his team (according to who scored.com). He has 13 caps and I can’t remember a single one of them. It’s a good accomplishment that he’s had the opportunities that he’s had, but he hasn’t really made people talk about him either. He’s not a goal scoring CM like Williams or Nagbe or Bradley used to be so he’s easy to forget and/or overlook. He didn’t really fit the diamond of JK so we’ll see what formation Bruce chooses and if he fits into it.

    • Morales is a true CDM/Destroyer who fits either in a 4-2-3-1 formation paired with a deep lying #8, or in a 4-1-3-2/4-4-2 diamond formation as the loan shielding CM. The reason he hasn’t received as much attention for call-ups is
      1) JK kept trying to force him into a wide MF role, which didn’t suit him.
      2) Until recently he (like D. Williams) was clearly behind Bradley & Jones in JK’s pecking order.

There have been a number of fans/pundits who have felt Morales and Williams should have received more consideration, as potential replacements for JJ as he’s gotten older & battled through injuries. However everyone has put a greater focus has been in finding a more advanced/attacking CM and less on the destroyer CM. This issue he’s facing now is that both Morales & D. Williams are both reaching the point in their careers where there are younger options who could be groomed for the role that they are best suited for.

      • There may be more than meets the eye holding Morales back. Arena quote from Feb 2nd interview with Espnfc: “We have some coaches here that know him, have talked about him a little bit. I don’t know him that well, but the general assessment is that we have good options in his position right now.”
