MLS Ticker: Trapp inks new deal with Crew, Rapids sign defender and more

Since signing with the club as a homegrown player, Wil Trapp has been one of the faces of the Columbus Crew, and the midfielder is set to remain one for at least the next several seasons.

The Crew announced Tuesday that Trapp has signed a new multi-year contract with the club. Targeted Allocation Money was used to sign the midfielder, who was named the team’s captain prior to the start of the season.

“I’m excited to stay here in Columbus and build this club and its brand on and off the field,” said Trapp. “It’s a wonderful opportunity with a great group of players to continue to push this club, style of soccer and my career forward. Playing in Columbus means a great deal to me and my family and I am humbled to remain a Crew SC player.”

Trapp is in his fifth season with the club, having made 95 regular-season appearances throughout his career. A 2016 MLS All-Star, Trapp made 29 starts for the club last season.

RAPIDS SIGN DEFENDER DA FONTE

The Colorado Rapids arguably have the best defense in MLS and the club took a step to add a bit more depth on Tuesday.

Former Sacramento Republic defender Mike da Fonte has signed a two-year contract with the Rapids, the club announced on Tuesday. The centerbacks  scored four goals in 19 appearances for the Republic last season after previously captaining New York Red Bulls II.

“We are pleased to have Mike join our club for the next two seasons,” said Rapids Head Coach Pablo Mastroeni. “He is a very athletic central defender with experience in Europe and with two prominent USL sides. We look forward to welcoming Mike to the Rapids.”

“Mike impressed in our preseason meeting with Sacramento last year and we continued to track his progress. He provides competition and increased depth to our already strong defensive core,” added Rapids Sporting Director Padraig Smith. “He is a player who we think has the necessary tools to be successful at the next level.”
