Soccer Wednesday: Your Running Commentary

Two teams booked their places in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals on Tuesday and two more can seal a spot in the final eight on Wednesday afternoon.

Barcelona will have to overcome quite the odds to battle their way to the next round. Facing off for a second leg clash with Paris Saint-Germain, Barca must overturn a 4-0 deficit from the opening leg, making them a longshot for a quarterfinal berth.

Borussia Dortmund, meanwhile, also face a deficit, but significantly better odds. The German side fell, 1-0, to Benfica in the opening leg, giving them plenty of hope as the second leg kicks off Wednesday in Germany.

Meanwhile in England, Manchester City faces off with Stoke City in midweek Premier League action as the former looks to continue their push to the top four.

  1. An inch-perfect cross – it had to be to beat two defenders and the ‘keeper – from Pulisic makes it 4-0.

  2. Pulisic set up Aubameyang beautifully twice within a couple minutes, then just finished it himself. Great work.

  3. You would think Tuchel will take Dembele off soon since he is sitting on a yellow right now and he has been reckless with some of his challenges.

  4. Does this make Pulisic the first american to ever score in the knock-out rounds? DMB maybe as I know he has both scored (several times) and made it to the semis, but I’m not sure any of those goals were in the knockout rounds

  5. P-sick makes it 2-0! Fought to win back a ball in his own half and then a silky smooth pass should have made it 2-0. Benefica can’t clear their lines and Pulisic is fed a ball while making a run into the right side of the area and chips the on-rushing ‘keeper…and then knee-slides like a boss.

  6. I don’t know if I completely agree but WhoScored has Pulisic listed as the top rated player from the first half.

  7. Pulisic fought hard to win a free kick that lead to the opening corner, he flicked on a near post header that led to the goal. He is constantly working and moving to win the ball back and get open. Dembele is an opportunity-killer…always making the wrong decision…it’s infuriating.

    • Dembele Kills multiple chances every game but he also seems to convert one or two every game. He is crazy undisciplined, but he is also crazy gifted

  8. I’m recording the Dortmund game but can’t wait lol. I saw Pulisic got the assist… Can anyone watching the match comment on how he and Dortmund are looking in the early going?

    • They’re dominating. He looks good. Not getting the ball as much as I would like but he certainly doesn’t look out of place. They should win this game by 3 or 4 goals as long as they can finish they’re chances

      • Finishing has kinda been their Achilles heel this year. Also, I’ve noticed that Pulisic plays extremely unselfish (regarding calling for the ball and taking shots), probably a little too much so.

I appreciate the update and glad to know he’s playing well. Hopefully they advance and Pulisic is able to keep gaining valuable experience!

      • That’s very interesting. I do not believe he has ever started centrally for them. In the very least, it speaks to his versatility.

Maybe Klinnsman was on to something starting him centrally vs Mex ha?

      • Not able to watch the game today, but as Dortmund has switched more from the 4-1-4-1 to a 3-4-3 he’s been more as forward with a wing outside. And a goal as I type comes across my screen.

  9. Pulisic getting the start. This is a huge moment in what can only be considered a must win game. I’m excited to not be productive this afternoon and watch this game.
