Sporting Kansas City tasted victory for the first time in 2017, and have David Bingham to thank for it.

The San Jose Earthquakes goalkeeper committed an 89th-minute blunder that gifted Sporting KC an insurance goal it wound up needing on the way to a 2-1 victory at Children’s Mercy Park on Saturday night.

Sporting KC forward Soony Wood struck a low show that Bingham redirected into his own net to make the score 2-0. Florian Jungwirth headed home a corner kick a few minutes later, making Bingham’s own goal the winning margin for Sporting KC.

The Earthquakes nearly equalized in the dying moments, but Tim Melia delivered the save of the night to deny a Simon Dawkins shot that was destined for goal.

It was a deserving victory for the home side, which controlled the action for much of the night. Benny Feilhaber ended SKC’s early-season scoring drought when he scored a stunning long-rage goal in the 38th minute to open the scoring. The ball originally looked to be heading to the far post with Dom Dwyer streaking into the box, however the ball carried just a bit and found its way into the top corner, freezing Bingham.

Despite all of the talk about the Earthquakes being more aggressive in the attack – they led the league in several offensive categories including chances created and possession – SKC played more of the aggressive side throughout the match. They held the Earthquakes to just a lone shot on goal for almost the entire match until second-half stoppage time and put continuous pressure on Bingham and the Earthquakes’ backline. Sporting KC outshot the Earthquakes 15-5 (4-3 on-goal) overall on the night.

Dwyer found himself in some controversy in the first half, not earning what could’ve been a pair of penalty kicks in the first half. In the opening minutes, it looked as if Earthquakes’ centerback Florian Jungwirth knocked down Dwyer inside the 18, however, referee Jair Marrufo allowed the play. Later in the first half, Dwyer appeared to have been clipped inside the 18, however, instead of earning a penalty kick, he was shown a yellow card by Marrufo for simulation.

Both teams will have next week off for international play. Sporting Kansas City returns to play on march 31st when they travel to Toronto FC. The Earthquakes will look to rebound at Yankee Stadium on April 1st when they take on New York City FC.

Benny Feilhaber kept Sporting Kansas City’s attack strong against and Earthquakes side that was known for their aggressive attack through the first two games. His golazo near the end of the first half broke the scoreless deadlock and gave SKC momentum going into the half.

Benny Feilhaber’s golazo in the 38th minute was the difference in the match today. His ball originally looked like it was headed to the far post with Dom Dwyer running in for the close header, however, the ball carried a bit and just dipped its way into the top corner, freezing Quakes’ keeper David Bingham in the net.

Match to Forget

David Bingham let a routine save on a shot by Soony Saad slip right through his gloves and into the back of his net just before stoppage time to give SKC a 2-0 lead and, eventually, the win. Florian Jungwirth scored on a header off of a corner to cut the SKC lead to 2-1, however had Bingham not slipped on the save, we could be talking about a potential 1-1 draw.
