Americans Abroad Weekend Preview: Wood, Miazga, Hyndman and more

Following an abundant amount of midweek matchups, several U.S. Men’s National Team regulars transition back to league play after successful domestic league cup results.

Christian Pulisic and Borussia Dortmund seek to remain third on the Bundesliga table as they face FC Cologne, who sit eighth on the table. Pulisic made a 10-minute cameo during Dortmund’s midweek DFB-Pokal semifinal victory over rivals Bayern Munich. Fellow finalists Timmy Chandler and Eintracht Frankfurt will travel to take on Hoffenheim, while Bobby Wood and Hamburg take on FC Augsburg.

Across the Atlantic Ocean, in Mexico, Omar Gonzalez and Pachuca look to feed off winning the CONCACAF Champions League  in a match against Cruz Azul, while Joe Corona, Michael Orozco and Club Tijuana play to remain first on the Liga MX table as they collide with Jose Torres and Tigres UANL.

Promotion takes centerstage in the English League Championship, with DeAndre Yedlin and Newcastle booking their spot in the Premier League on Wednesday. Tim Ream’s Fulham currently holds the last promotion playoff spot heading into a match against Brentford, while David Wagner and Huddersfield Town sit third ahead of a  clash with Birmingham City. At the bottom, Eric Lichaj and Nottingham Forest continue to fight off relegation in Saturday’s match against Queens Park Rangers.

Elsewhere, Matt Miazga and Vitesse play their most important game this year as they take on AZ Alkmaar in the KNVB Cup Final, while Emerson Hyndman and Rangers play their second Old Firm in six days against Celtic.

  1. Reading and DWilliams and David Wagner’s Huddersfield clinched promotion playoff around, Fulham just needs to avoid a huge blowout to qualify. With 3 out of 4 teams in the playoff with American connections there is a good chance we replace our two Americans leaving the BPL with two Americans Yedlin and Ream/Williams/or Wagner.

  2. Carter Vickers has been ruled out for the remainder of the season by Spurs. Could mean no CCV for U20 WC as well.

Gooch would seem in better position for playing time next season as Sunderland finally drops to the Championship. Of course it will be in the Championship.

  3. Not exactly Americans abroad topic, but if Costa Rica wins or draws against Cuba today at the U17s, they play in a group with Mexico and host Panama. If they lose to Cuba the play Honduras and US. Might they not try very hard since winning actually puts them in a tougher group?

    • In my opinion it would be pretty pathetic for a team of teenagers to openly discuss and proceed in effort to underperform. If the coaches decide to rest players players that is one thing, blatantly telling your kids to lose would be disgraceful.

      • Yet it happens quite often. I don’t think they would openly try to lose, but if you play all your 2nd teamers in an effort to “give them experience” and it just happens ……..

    • No way in hell Costa Rica looses to Cuba. A group with them, Mexico and Panama, would be very cool and would also keep all these three dangerous teams out of the US team’s qualifying path. I hope this is the case. By the way, Cuba might also play for the tie too, so it could backfire big time on Costa Rica.
