Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Arriola, Pulisic, Hyndman and more

A trio of young Americans provided assists over the weekend while one U.S. Men’s National Team defender was hit with an unfortunate own goal in defeat.

Paul Arriola, Christian Pulisic and Emerson Hyndman each provided an assist over the weekend, helping to lift their respective sides to victory. John Brooks, meanwhile, wasn’t as fortunate, as the defender knocked in an own goal in a 1-0 Hertha Berlin defeat.

In English action, DeAndre Yedlin made his return to the field from his recent injury. The USMNT fullback joined as a late substitute in  Newcastle’s 1-1 draw on Friday, ending his extended absence due to a thigh injury.

Matt Miazga, meanwhile, was on the other end of the injury bug, as the defender was removed midway through the first half of a Vitesse loss due to injury. Elsewhere, Jorge Villafana went a full 90 minutes, Geoff Cameron helped Stoke City earn a big victory and Omar Gonzalez helped preserve a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw.

  1. Maybe its schadenfrude, but I’d love to see the highlights (lowlight?) of Brooks’ own goal, or any of the assists/goals from this weekend actually.

I’m concerned why Lynden Gooch and Boyd aren’t even dressing anymore.

    • Gooch has been a starter and major contributor for Sunderland’s U-23s during the Euro-Youth championship competition. His performances (per Sunderland’s website) have been good.
If Sunderland stay up he should be back to getting 1st team minutes after this summer unless they go out and buy a bunch of players this summer.

      • Sunderland are 9 points from safety, although they have a game in hand, with 6 matches left. Relegation seems very likely unless the Black Cats have another Great Escape and win 4 or 5 of the 6 remaining. Considering they only have 21 points in 32 matches, the odds are massive that they can avoid relegation. It’s odd, because IMO they have more attacking talent than they did when Jozy was there. Must be the curse of David Moyes.

  2. Why no love for former US U20 international Romain Gall. Entered in the 83 minute of Sundsvall’s loss to Hacken in the Swedish Allsveskan. He’s played 32 minutes over the first three weeks of the season, but that’s more than some of the guys on this list.

  3. Hyndman’s assist was quality. Good buildup and could’ve taken the goal himself, but played to a teammate in a little better position for the easy finish. Looks like he easily could’ve had a couple more. I can’t see how the guy isn’t in the USMNT 23 before WC 2018.

Arriola’s was a little more garden variety. I didn’t see a lot from him in the highlights.

    • IMO Hyndman should be on the Gold Cup roster, BUT that might depend on what happens with Bournemouth and the status of his loan to Rangers. Bournemouth are currently 7 points clear of the drop zone with 5 matches remaining, so they are a good bet to stay in the EPL. Obviously EH has been a big success for Rangers, and if they had him the full year they might have won the SPL, but I don’t know if they can really afford to buy players. I hope that if Bournemouth keeps him, either he sees significant minutes or they loan him or sell him to a club that will give him minutes.

    • According to Hamburg’s English Twitter (an unofficial account) he had a knee injury, he was originally scheduled to travel with the club, but was a late scratch and stayed in Hamburg. Apparently he did not participate in team training all last week.

    • He was ruled out with a knee problem… but that’s very vague. Hopefully just a training knock and not a real issue. Found that on a German site, I haven’t seen anything more detailed anywhere.

      • Swelling on the knee. He’s been training separately. Sounds minor though as the coach implied that even if Bobby wasn’t ready on the weekend, he’d be ready for the next game. Shame, they could have really used him against WB.

    • He is being used as hybrid defensive/attacking mid, as a direct link to the wingers when starting an attach. In my opinion, Corona has done a great job in this role.
