Lefevre suspended over anti-Trump Instagram post

Voicing an opinion on the political climate is nothing new for professional athletes, but Montreal Impact defender Wandrille Lefevre may have taken things a bit too far with his latest Instagram post that’s landed him in hot water.

The 27-year-old posted a now-deleted image of him with a gun with the caption “Since Donald is in power, better safe than sorry.”

Montreal swiftly reacted to the post by announcing the suspension of Lefevre through its social media accounts.

However, the suspension from the club may not last long. ESPN reported that the Impact don’t have the power to suspend Lefevre, only the league office does.

The 27-year-old Lefevre has played just 13 minutes in two matches as a substitute for the Impact in 2017 season. Montreal hosts Atlanta United on Saturday at Stade Saputo.

  1. Awful idea posing with a gun. I cannot stand trump either, but posing with a gun was just idiotic. Express yourself in a more intellectual way, 27 is a age where he should know this.

    • Imagine the exponential uproar if it wasn’t.
(Incidentally, I’m glad the Impact acted swiftly. There’s absolutely no room for silly antics regardless of ideology).

      • Are you implying if the individual wasn’t a “white/middle class” man there would have been a greater response? There has, and it’s been met with amusement – not hysteria.

  2. If it is true that only the league can suspend a player,
I have a hard time believing that the league would overturn a team’s decision except in very extreme cases, most likely not to ever happen.

Well, that’s one way to get some attention when you’re riding the bench. Its a bold strategy Cotton. Lets see if it pays off for em.

      • I think it can be argued that Trump proved that there is no such thing as bad publicity. As a student of US history, I think it’s safe to say that no one has ever been nominated, much less elected, to the presidency with so many known scandals and questionable activities as Trump.

      • In reply to GaryPage,
As a professor of history I assure you that Trump’s scandals and questionable business dealing are nothing historic compared to his fellow US Presidents.
Bill Clinton’s multiple affairs became exposed during the campaign as did whispers of far worse, but even those were nothing near as scandalous or shocking as Grover Cleveland’s illegitimate child! Consider the culture of the time and frankly nothing could have been more shocking. Go back a little further and you find Andrew Jackson’s wife’s polygamy as a scandal.

So no, there have been plenty of shocking scandolous candidates. Heck, there were two this time!

…or, you know. That whole genocide thing post-election. Conveniently absent from history books in it’s full glory.
