Sporting KC attack overwhelms Rapids in home rout

Sporting KC continued to solve problems in front of goal, adding three more home goals in another win at Children’s Mercy Park.

Key offseason signing Gerso Fernandes sealed a victory for a Sporting KC attack that has started slow in the 2017 season. Seth Sinovic and Dom Dwyer also struck in a 3-1 win over the Colorado Rapids Saturday night in Kansas City, Kansas.

The goal for Fernandes was the first from the Guinea-Bisseau international, who was signed by Sporting KC during the offseason. Fernandes threatened on the right wing as he has in most matches this season, but the 58th-minute goal was his first as a Sporting player.

Dom Dwyer put an exclamation point on the victory with an 85th minute strike. A penalty kick goal from Kevin Doyle in stoppage time gave the Rapids some consolation and prevented another shutout from Sporting KC.

Sinovic’s blast off the laces of his right foot put Sporting in a comfortable position in only the 6th minute for another dominant showing. The hosts again controlled possession against a Rapids team that’s off to a lukewarm start this season.

Trouble in front of goal seems to be subsiding for Sporting. Three more home goals shows the team is clicking. Before Saturday’s win, Sporting had only scored two goals in the first four games of the season.

The loss for the Rapids makes it three games without a win. The Rapids roster is in flux recently with the trade of captain Sam Cronin and defender Marc Burch to Minnesota United this week. The Rapids acquired Josh Gatt, who sat on the bench for Saturday’s game, and Mohamed Saeid, who wasn’t named to the gameday roster.

In the absence of midfield starter Cronin, 22-year-old Bismark Adjei Boateng started at defensive midfielder for the Rapids. Boateng is a Ghanaian midfielder signed by the Rapids over the offseason from Manchester City.

Sporting KC missed midfielder Benny Feilhaber for a second straight game due to a thigh strain. Feilhaber may be back for the next match, as he was listed questionable.

Following the win, Sporting kC hits the road next weekend to take on the Portland Timbers. The Rapids return home to face Real Salt Lake.

MAN OF THE MATCH

An unlikely leader of the Sporting KC counter attack caused plenty of problems for the Rapids on the night. Defender Seth Sinovic notched a goal and an assist in the overwhelming win.

MOMENT OF THE MATCH

The goal that sealed a dominant performance came from a player Sporting has high expectations for. Winger Gerso Fernandes scored his first goal as a Sporting KC player in the 58th minute.

MATCH TO FORGET

The Rapids managed six shots with two on target. However, none of those chances amounted to real scoring opportunities and it was a match to forget for Rapids go-to man Shkelzen Gashi.
