Yedlin, Newcastle secure promotion in win over Preston North End

All Newcastle United needed to earn promotion and their return to the English Premier League was a lone point in their Monday night match against Preston North End.

They got that and a whole lot more, defeating Preston North End, 4-1, and securing their promotion back into the Premier League for the 2017-18 season. DeAndre Yedlin, who joined the club prior to the season, was an unused substitute in Monday’s match.

The Toon set the tone early as Ayoze Perez put Newcastle on up 1-0 in just the seventh minute setting the tone for the night ahead at St. James’ Park. Preston had their spells of possession throughout the night and capitalized shortly after Perez’s goal as Jordan Hugill pulled them even at one goal apiece with his goal in the 14th minute.

Both teams traded and missed chances in the first half once the match was tied, but Newcastle finished the first half strong as Christian Atsu scored on a perfect counter in the midfield off of a turnover by Preston’s Daniel Johnson, giving Newcastle a 2-1 lead going into the break.

Newcastle put the match away off of a Matt Ritchie penalty kick in the 64th minute, putting them up 3-1 and Perez added another goal just minutes later to put the Toon up 4-1.

Promotion aside, the win marks Newcastle’s first win since April 5. They entered Monday night’s match winless in their last three, losers of two of their last three matches.

The Toon become just the second team of the last 15 to win automatic promotion just a year after relegation. They are still chasing Brighton for the EFL Championship trophy and have two more matches to pull that feat off. Brighton currently stands at 92 points in the table while Newcastle has 88 after Monday night’s win.

  1. Not shocking Rafa was able to get them back. He seems to favor Yedlin when healthy… Hopefully DY is ready to be back in the Premiership and will continue pushing himself. Newcastle will need to add some pieces if they want to find their way back to the middle of the table.

  2. Actually, If you watched him play in his last match, it was not a good showing. The USA player in the EPL hype machine rolls on, but none of those players are better than just adequate club pros right now. The flaw in all these players in England is poor technical ability with the ball, which seems to be a problem with most players who develop in the USA. The emphasis seems to still be on size, strength and power, which wins games at the Development Select level . Kante would have been too small to develop here.

    • While I agree that generally speaking the Yanks in England have not been the most technical players, that is changing. We have a number of very promising technical players on the books with EPL clubs, it’s just that most of them are still developing and gaining experience.

Hyndman, Zelalem, CCV, Gooch, even Yedlin.

In another year or so when we add these guys and the players in Germany (Pulisic, Brooks, Wood, Green, etc…) into the “A” team player pool Arena and/or the next manager should have a very nice group of players to select from.

Since we play in CONCACAF there will still be a need on our teams for physical players. Guys that can handle the cheap shots, hacks, and officiating that are still too prevalent here. Players like Zardes, Jozy, Bedoya, Gonzalez, etc… But in general the squad should/will move away from this after 2018. It’s just that most of our best prospects aren’t quite ready yet.

    • kante’s a funny example to use, since his technical ability is average at best; his game is based on his ability to read the play and run all day.

      • Almost like he wants it to be true so he makes up stuff.

Like talking about size being too big a factor in an article about Yedlin

    • Within the last year I remember reading a critique from an English player that in their youth system their emphasis has been on long balls and having forwards run onto them. Many English decried their lack of technical ability. I remember a friendly about 5 years ago between England and Mexico in England where the Mexicans controlled play and was much more technical, but the
English won by making a good cross and heading it in for a 1-0- win. You should watch more MLS. US players are becoming much more technically proficient. I think that the importation of a lgrowing number of Latin American players into MLS is improving the technical ability of US players. In short, things are more complicated than the simple generalization you present.

You can’t possibly think a guy spewing that post is going to watch Nagbe the Giant play in MLS.

      • Nagbe is pretty skilled….for MLS standards. He would never make it in the EPL. You sort of made his point by bringing him up.

    • still coming back from injury. apparently anita (his replacement) didn’t look that great, so i wouldn’t worry just yet.
