Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Horvath, Wood, McKennie and more

Ethan Horvath and Club Brugge are bound for the Champions League, headlining the list of Americans Abroad that took the field as European leagues move towards a close.

The U.S. Men’s National Team goalkeeper made his fourth consecutive start on Sunday, helping lead Club Brugge to a 2-1 win over Gent. The win locks up the Belgian club’s spot in next season’s Champions League, where they will enter in the second qualifying round.

Christian Pulisic and Borussia Dortmund also locked up their Champions League spot, while Bobby Wood and Hamburg sealed safety with one final win. Facing fellow relegation candidates Wolfsburg, Hamburg earned a late victory on Sunday, keeping them out of the relegation playoff.

Elsewhere, Weston McKennie made his highly-anticipated Schalke debut, Geoff Cameron and Stoke City ended the season on a high and Julian Green’s Stuttgart locked up the 2. Bundesliga title and a spot in the German top flight. Paul Arriola, Joe Corona and Club Tijuana were less fortunate, as Xolos fell to Tigres in the Liga MX semifinal.

  1. Also, 2015 U20 World Cup player Maki Tall made his debut for Tours first team in Ligue2 and scored on his first touch in the 60th minute. I couldn’t find any reference to where Tall was last season, but he scored 10 goals for Tours II in the CF2 (5th Division of France) this season. French 5th division, Rubin in Denmark and Zelalem in Dutch 2 don’t seem so bad now do they.

  2. Meanwhile in Sweden, Mix got his 2nd assist of the season for Goteborg in a 4-0 win against Sundsvall, and Romain Gall made his second straight start and eighth appearance for Sundsvall.

  3. A decent season for Yanks Abroad, though a few worries for players:

    1. Kitchen – went from captain to the bench
    2. Green – never stepped up, will find it harder to do so next season
    3. Aron – never got his starting role back. going to a new club this summer
    4. Boyd – earned a starting role then fell off the map. going to a new club this summer
    5. Zalelem – failed to standout in a poor league while on loan

    • Green was a mid-season transfer for a team that was targeted to be promoted. This pre-season is going to be the make/brake for him Stuttgart. A strong pre-season could see him in the starting XI or at least a significant contributor off the bench. A poor pre-season could see him searching for a loan deal again.
Boyd & ArJo were always going to be in difficult spots. Their track record with injuries and the team’s poor performances was going to make it difficult to get much PT. Hopefully they can either find new clubs or make real contributions in the new season.
Kitchen & Zelalem are the 2 that were most concerning to me. You rarely see a player get promoted to Captain than shortly thereafter benched unless there was some kind of injury. Zelalem’s limited PT after a semi productive loan last year is very disappointing. He needs to look for a new home…not a loan….somewhere he can get consistent minutes. At this point if he needs to go to the Championship or B2 he should.

      • With Kitchen remember he joined Hearts last January and then when directly to NT at the end of the season for Copa training then right after the Copa, Hearts began Europa League qualifying rounds. Scotland places the top 6 in the Championship round Kitchen moved to the bench around the same time Hearts was eliminated from European competition for next year. Might be something or it might just be resting the legs of your captain who had been going nonstop for 16 straight months when the games meant nothing.
